Chapter 1

At the mention of the Don, Ellie Nobili paled. Her eyes reddened instantly, and tears fell to the floor one after another. "What do you mean? Are you using Father to threaten me?

"I may be stupid... but I truly love this family. How could you doubt that...

"Then I'll prove it by dying!"

In tears, Ellie ran to the window and put one foot on the sill. She swayed like a kite about to be carried away by the next gust.

The Donna raced over, pulled her down, and collapsed to her knees, sobbing. "My darling, I've never doubted your love for us. Please don't do anything foolish!"

Anguish filled my brother's eyes as he roared at the staff, "Call an ambulance! Can't you see the princess is in shock?"

My fiancé, Jack Romano, made one call and ordered his people to prepare his private jet to fly in the world's best specialists.

I watched coldly, an outsider to it all.

In Mafia families, schemes to win favor were hardly rare. I had seen them all before.

When the Calvi family took me in, their adopted daughter, Lucy Calvi, deliberately drained the family accounts to frame me. She wanted to watch me fail to cover the losses, face punishment, and be thrown out.

I chose the fastest way to make money. I went to a casino, placed the biggest wager in the room, and turned the deficit into a profit. The victory made the Calvi family famous, and when the truth came out, Lucy was disowned.

When the Cara family took me in, their adopted daughter, Jessie Cara, secretly conspired with a rival family to eliminate me. She never expected me to use a single well-aimed shell to wipe out the enemy that had plagued the family for years and then take her place as heir.

Now I had returned to the most powerful family in Sicily: the Nobili family.

Yet their adopted daughter thought a few empty displays of affection could drive me away.

She clearly hadn't realized that in a Mafia family, ability was what kept you standing.

"Lilith, do you really think getting rid of Ellie will make us accept you?"

My brother, John Nobili, stood before me, his eyes full of contempt. "Everyone here has seen how Ellie has cared for us all these years. An outsider can't just wedge herself between us!

"You came back and drove her onto a windowsill on your very first day. If she comes to any harm from the shock, I'll make you pay tenfold.

"I don't know why Father brought you back. Does he really believe that prophecy? I think it's nothing but a trick you used to force your way into this family."

From John's vicious tone, anyone would have thought Ellie was his biological sister.

Every word was a blatant defense of Ellie.

Before I could speak, Jack cut in sharply. "Even if you drive Ellie out, I won't marry a woman as vicious as you.

"The Nobili family's losses aren't Ellie's fault. She's still young. Mistakes happen. I'm sure the Don will handle it, and it isn't your place to interfere.

"You'd better apologize to Ellie before the Don arrives. She's the Nobili family's favorite princess. If he finds out you've hurt her, he'll punish you himself."

Their favorite princess?

I laughed out loud. Mafia families didn't have favorites. Everything came down to power and profit.

They still had no idea how serious Ellie's mistake was. It could destroy the entire Nobili family and drag Jack's family down with it.

I chose not to tell them. Instead, I sat down and sanitized my hand after touching Ellie's hair.

"You're absolutely right. I shouldn't come between the three of you.

"I have no intention of going through with this engagement or tying myself to any family. If you hate having me here, I can leave today.

"Before I go, one suggestion. This is only the second floor. Next time Ellie wants to kill herself, she should pick a better spot."

My father removed me from the line of succession, and my younger brother took my place. I was thrown out this morning."This is all your fault. If you hadn't bullied Lilith, and if I hadn't believed your father's bullshit, I never would have staked half my family's chips and caused such devastating losses!"John, I'm going to show all of you what it feels like to have nothing!"John laughed. "And you did nothing wrong? Did we force you? Jack, you're nothing but a bastard and a hypocrite!"He hurled abuse at Jack without noticing the venom in Jack's voice. The next morning, Ellie's body was found in a drainage ditch on the outskirts of the city.John was covered in injuries and barely alive. The medical examiner determined that Ellie had been strangled. The money covered only a fraction of the interest they owed the loan sharks.Sarah's jewelry box stood empty. Every piece had been sold for less than a tenth of its original price.Ellie's dressing room was stripped bare. The auction house boxed up her designer gowns, limited-edition handbags, and dozens of pairs of handmade shoes.Every member of the staff vanished overnight. The vast estate held nothing but empty rooms and dust.It rained hard the day they moved out.John led the way, dragging two suitcases. Sarah followed in an old raincoat.Only Ellie kept glancing around furtively as she slipped a gown into her suitcase."Put that back." John turned and caught her in the act, his voice icy. "It belongs to Lilith. Give it back."Ellie jerked her hand back. "I only want something to remember it by.

I didn't waste my breath arguing with her.Instead, I calmly pulled out the independence agreement.Every member of the Nobili family went white. This was the agreement they had pressured me to sign the day before.I raised an eyebrow. "It bears the family seal. The agreement is binding."From this moment on, I have no ties to the Nobili family."Collect every chip. Now."Rapid footsteps echoed through the hall. The next moment, Don Alessandro Nobili strode inside. He looked as if he had aged ten years. His weathered eyes pleaded with me. "Lilith, please take that back. The Nobili family can survive without them, but it cannot survive without you!"Say the word, and I'll cast all three of them out immediately."John stepped forward in disbelief. "Father, what is this? How can you do this to us over an outsider?"Alessandro slapped John hard across the face. "You are no son of mine!"What did I tell you when I sent Lilith home? And this is how you treated her?"You tried to destroy the

The entire Royal Casino was dead silent for three seconds. Then the room erupted like a powder keg."Lilith? What are you doing here?"John sprang from his chair and pointed at me with a trembling finger. His wineglass shattered on the floor, splashing scarlet wine across it.People started murmuring."The Nobili family picked the wrong enemy this time. Who knew Lilith had enough influence to bring both the Cara and Calvi families to her side?""Their blind devotion to that adopted daughter looks ridiculous now.""Who knows what trick that adopted daughter used to make the entire Nobili family so obsessed with her?""Nonsense!"A roar came from the back of the crowd.John shoved people aside and reached me in a few strides, his face scarlet and the veins in his neck bulging."Lilith! What are you up to now?"He jabbed a finger in my face and roared, nearly spraying me with spit."Driving Ellie onto a windowsill wasn't enough for you? Now you're conspiring with outsiders against the Nob

The Royal Casino.Crystal chandeliers bathed the hall in gold, and the air smelled of cigar smoke and champagne. All five families were already there.John led the way with his head held high, as if he had already won.Ellie wore the heir's gown and held Sarah's arm, basking in the attention she drew from everyone in the room."The Nobili princess looks beautiful tonight.""Isn't that lion crest reserved for the heir? I thought they had only just found their biological daughter.""More than a decade of love can't be undone by a DNA test."Whispers swelled around them like a tide.Ellie lifted her chin with a sweet, proud smile.I followed them in silence at the very back, as if I were the adopted daughter. The Nobili party settled into their seats, smiling as if they had already won.John was convinced his father had obtained inside information while overseas and arranged everything. The next day, the five Sicilian families held their annual high-stakes game at the Royal Casino in Catania. It was entertainment in name only. In reality, the families used the game to redraw territories and redistribute power.Every chip represented a port, a mine, or a shipping route. For the Nobili family, this was their final chance to recoup their losses.Ellie got up early to dress for the occasion, determined to make a grand entrance. When she saw me in a plain white T-shirt, she scoffed. "Didn't the other families teach you anything? You wear a formal gown to a game like this."If you don't own one, there's a spare here. I was going to donate it to a little girl at the orphanage I support, but you can borrow it first."I heard the insult in her voice and looked at the gown she meant.A charity hand-me-down, offered to me as an evening gown. The ploy was pathetic.I refused without hesitation. "No, thank you. I prefer being comfortable."Sarah gave me a disapproving look, and Jo
