A Trap I Never Saw Coming

CHAPTER 51 : A TRAP I NEVER SAW COMINGAvenne’s POVThe police car stopped in front of a large building, and I looked through the window. This wasn’t an ordinary police station. The building belonged to the settlement’s security department. Armed guards stood near the entrance, and several officers moved in and out with files in their hands. A few people sat on benches outside, waiting to be questioned.I swallowed hard.I had agreed to come with the officers because I believed I could explain what had happened. I hadn’t done anything wrong, and I was confident that once they listened to my side of the story, they would allow me to return to the medical center. At least, that was what I had thought.“Get down,” one of the officers ordered.I opened the door and stepped out.He led me inside, while another officer followed behind me. We passed several rooms before stopping in front of a door.“Go in.”I entered without arguing. The room was small, with a table in the middle and three c

CHAPTER 52 : WHY CAN’T I STOP THINKING ABOUT HER?The President’s POVI sat behind my desk, staring at the documents in front of me.I had been looking at the same page for almost twenty minutes, yet I couldn’t remember a single word I had read.My mind was somewhere else.At the security department. With Avenne.I clenched my jaw and forced myself to look at the documents again. What was wrong with me?I had attended countless meetings, handled difficult situations, and made decisions that affected thousands of people in the settlement. I had never allowed personal matters to distract me from my responsibilities.Yet today, I couldn’t concentrate on anything. All because a woman had been taken away for questioning.A woman who had insisted on going with the officers even when I had offered to protect her.I leaned back in my chair and closed my eyes. Her face appeared in my mind immediately. The way she had looked at me before removing her mask. The way she had touched my arm and tol

He Came For Me

CHAPTER: THE PRESIDENT CAME FOR MEPOV: PresidentI arrived at the security department expecting to take Avenne home.I had spent most of the day thinking about her. Even when I tried to focus on my work, my mind kept returning to the same question. Was she all right? My assistant had assured me that everything had been arranged and Avenne would be released. However, I could not bring myself to sit in my office and wait for another report.I wanted to see her myself. The officers at the entrance straightened when they saw me approaching.“Good afternoon, sir.”“Where is Avenne?” I asked. One of them stepped forward. “Sir, the investigation is still ongoing.”I stopped walking.“What do you mean by that? I was informed that arrangements had been made for her release.”“Yes, sir. Arrangements have been made, but the officer in charge wants her to sign a statement accepting responsibility for the incident before she leaves.”My expression changed.“Accepting responsibility?”“Yes, sir.”“

CHAPTER: A GAME WELL PLAYEDPOV: PresidentI left the security department with a heavy heart.I had gone there expecting to take Avenne home, but things had not gone as planned. The officer in charge had insisted that the investigation must continue. Although they had agreed to review the statement, they were not ready to release her.I had wanted to force the issue, but I knew that doing so could give them another reason to accuse me of interfering with their work.Still, I was not happy about leaving her behind.I got into my car and leaned back against the seat.“Drive,” I told my driver. The car moved, but my mind remained at the security department.I could still remember Avenne’s face when she realized she would not be leaving with me.She had tried to act as though it did not matter. That woman could be so stubborn.I had gone there to help her, yet she had looked at me as if she could handle everything without me.Perhaps she could. But that did not mean I had to stand aside a

They Wouldn’t Let Me Go

CHAPTER55: THEY WOULDN’T LET ME GOPOV: AvenneI was beginning to lose my patience.I had been sitting in the detention room for hours, and nobody seemed to care about how long I had been there.I had answered their questions. I had explained what happened at the event. I had even refused to sign a statement that blamed me for something I had not done.Yet, I was still here. The door opened, and an officer walked in with a file in his hand.I looked up at him, hoping he had finally come to tell me I could leave.Instead, he pulled out a chair and sat across from me.“We have some more questions for you.”I closed my eyes briefly.More questions?“What else do you want to know?” I asked.“The woman you treated at the event is missing.”My eyes flew open.“What?”“The woman can no longer be found. We have checked the medical center, but nobody knows where she is.”I stared at him, trying to understand what he had just said.“Did you check whether she was transferred to another medical c

CHAPTER 56: BLOCK EVERY EXITPOV: PresidentI sat behind my desk, staring at the report in front of me.I had barely slept the previous night. Every time I closed my eyes, I remembered Avenne sitting in that detention room, looking exhausted and frustrated.I had gone there to bring her home, but I had returned alone. The officers had insisted that the investigation was still ongoing. They claimed they could not release her until the missing woman was found. At first, I thought they were simply being difficult. Now, the more I thought about the situation, the more suspicious I became.A woman had collapsed at an event. Avenne had tried to save her, yet she was accused of causing her condition. Then, before the investigation could be completed, the woman disappeared. It was too much of a coincidence.I picked up my phone and called my assistant.“Come to my office now.”“I will be there shortly, sir.”I ended the call and leaned back in my chair.A few minutes later, the door opened, a

CHAPTER 57: THE KISS I NEVER PLANNEDPOV: AvenneI was tired.I was hungry, frustrated, and tired of answering the same questions over and over again.Since the woman disappeared, the officers had refused to let me go. They kept telling me that the investigation was still ongoing, as if I had anything to do with her disappearance.I had already explained everything I knew.I didn’t know the woman before the event. I had never met her, and I had no reason to hurt her. I only rushed to help because she had collapsed in front of everyone. Was that now a crime?I stood up from the chair and walked towards the door.“Officer, I want to speak to the person in charge.”The officer outside looked at me.“What is it now?”“I want to know when you people intend to release me. I have been here for hours, and nobody has told me anything.”“The investigation is still ongoing.”I closed my eyes.“That is what you have been telling me since yesterday!”“Then you should wait until we have something n

CHAPTER: THE KISS I COULDN’T EXPLAINAVENNE’S POVI was still resting against his chest as he carried me out of the security department.I could hear his heartbeat, and every time I remembered what I had done, my face became hot.I had kissed him.I had actually kissed the President on the lips! How was I supposed to face him after this?I closed my eyes and wished I could turn back time. If I had known that my moment of happiness would lead to this embarrassment, I would have controlled myself. But it was too late now.“Mr. President,” I called softly. He looked down at me. “What is it?”“Please, put me down. I can walk.”“No, you can’t.”“I can!”“Then why are you resting your entire body against me?”I immediately straightened up, only to feel tired again a few seconds later. He looked at me as if he had already known I would do that.“Stop arguing and rest.”I pressed my lips together. How could he say that so calmly when I was struggling to look at him?“I’m not a child,” I mutte

CHAPTER: WHO SENT HER?AVENNE’S POVI had barely finished getting ready when I decided to leave my room.I was tired of staying inside, and I needed something to take my mind off what had happened the previous day.Unfortunately, the moment I remembered the President’s question, I felt embarrassed all over again.Do you regret kissing me?Why would he ask me that?I shook my head and continued walking. I wasn’t going to spend the whole day thinking about one question. As I approached his office, I heard voices coming from inside.I recognized the President’s voice immediately, but the second voice belonged to his assistant.“We have found the lady who did it, sir,” his assistant reported.I stopped walking. The lady who did it?Did he mean the woman who had pretended to be sick at the event?I moved closer to the door without realizing it.“Where is she now?” the President asked.“She is waiting outside. We brought her here as you instructed.”“Bring her in.”I was about to leave when

CHAPTER: BEATRICE WAS BEHIND ITAVENNE’S POVLater that day, I was still in the President’s office when his assistant returned with a report from the security officers. The President had asked them to investigate the woman who had framed me. Although she had been taken away, we still didn’t know why she had done it or who had sent her.I was beginning to think we wouldn’t get an answer anytime soon.“Sir, we have an update,” the assistant said. The President looked up from the documents on his desk. “Go ahead.”“The woman has confessed. She admitted that someone paid her to pretend to be sick at the event and ensure that Avenne was blamed.”My hands tightened on my lap.At least we finally had a confession.“Who sent her?” the President asked. The assistant hesitated briefly before answering.“Beatrice, sir.”I froze. For a moment, I wondered whether I had heard him correctly.“Who?” I asked before I could stop myself. The assistant looked at me.“Beatrice,” he repeated.I stared at h
