“Melody, we’re going to be late for church,” my step-dad, Nick, tells mefrom downstairs. Nick came into my life when I was eight, right at the agewhen I could have called him by his name instead of anything else. Butwhen I shyly asked Nick if I could call him Daddy, he had the biggest smilefor me. Even when all my friends stopped calling their parents Mommy andDaddy, I could never rid myself of the habit.Nick doesn’t yell, well, not exactly. My stepdad doesn’t like to yell. But he can be stern. It’s not scary or anything, but it’s enough to know that Ineed to listen to him. Daddy doesn’t like to be late. He likes rules and order,so the fact that we are five minutes behind schedule means Daddy’s sternvoice is out. I don’t want to disappoint Daddy, so I quickly finish braidingmy hair.My stockings itch as I put my black leather shoes on. I hate wearingthe white stockings to church – they look like what little girls wear toparties. I’ve tried explaining to Daddy that now that

The following Sunday, I know for sure I’m going to hell. I think about lyingand telling Daddy I’m sick so that I don’t have to go to church. If I’malready going to hell, then another lie won’t be that bad.“Melody! Now.” Daddy shouts at me from downstairs.I’m dressed – my floral dress hitting my knees with my black leather shoeson. But I still sit on my bed, feeling like my legs are full of lead and there’sno way I can walk down the stairs. And then I hear Daddy’s footsteps grow louder as he comes upstairs. Whenhe opens the door, he finds me sitting on my bed, my head down, tearsthreatening to leak out of my eyes.“Melody! We are now ten minutes late for church. You’re already getting aspanking later for this behavior. If you don’t come now, it will be my belt.”That does it. I finally look up, my eyes wide with horror. I’ve never beenspanked with Daddy’s belt before. It’s not even the fact that I know it willbe so painful. It’s more the fact that if Daddy thinks I need his

Monday afternoon, I’m in Daddy’s bedroom. Everything is better in the bestpossible way. When we were in the shower together, Daddy let me explorehis body as I washed it. My favorite part was touching his soft cock andhaving it transform right in my hands into something that was as hard assteel.Daddy touched me all over, too. It felt freeing to be able to tell him aboutmy tingles and to know he would help me. After we gave each otherorgasms, I fell asleep in Daddy’s bed, surrounded by his familiar scent. Now, I’m looking at Daddy’s magazines. It’s okay, though, because he toldme I could. I still have so many questions about our bodies, tingles, andespecially sex. Daddy said it would be a good idea to look through them tosee what interests me. He said to make a pile of pictures that made meespecially tingly, and then we would talk about them.“Hello? Melody?” Uncle Andrew calls out as he closes the door behindhim.“Hello!” I respond from upstairs. I leave the magazines where

The next morning, I woke up with one thought in my head. The photograph.I had barely slept.Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the same three people standing together. My mother.Nick.And the stranger.I still didn't know who he was.But I knew one thing.Nick had recognized him.And whatever was written behind that photograph was important enough for him to lock his study.I got out of bed and dressed for breakfast. When I entered the kitchen, Nick was already there. He was sitting at the table with a cup of coffee in front of him."Good morning," I said.He looked up."Morning."His voice sounded normal.Almost too normal.I prepared breakfast and placed his plate in front of him.For several minutes, neither of us spoke. Then I couldn't hold it anymore."Nick?"He looked at me."Yes?""Who was the man in that photograph?"His hand stopped halfway to his cup.Only for a moment. Then he continued."I told you last night. It was an old photograph.""I know.""Then why are you asking

The Night She Died“Melody, don't trust him!”Andrew's words echoed through the house. For a few seconds, I couldn't move.I looked at Nick.He was still standing in my bedroom, staring toward the hallway. His face had changed. The man who had always seemed to have an answer for everything suddenly looked like he didn't know what to do.“What's happening?” I whispered.Nick didn't answer.“Nick?”He finally looked at me.“Stay in this room.”“No.”His eyebrows pulled together.“Melody—”“No.”My voice shook, but I didn't care.“You just told me my mother didn't die five years ago.”His expression tightened.“And now Andrew is downstairs telling me not to trust you.”I stepped closer.“I deserve to know what is happening.”Nick opened his mouth. Before he could say anything, Andrew shouted again.“Nick! We need to talk!”Nick looked toward the hallway. Then back at me.“Lock the door.”He walked out.I followed.“Melody, I told you to stay upstairs.”“And I told you I'm not a child.”H
