I was beginning to think my life had become a badly written joke because every time I tried to solve one problem, three more appeared. My mother was still missing, my pregnancy appointments kept piling up, and Helena’s inheritance had turned my name into something people suddenly cared about.I sat behind the counter in my shop, staring at the documents my lawyer had sent me.I had shares in Kingsley Holdings, properties and assets. This is basically a fortune I had never even asked for.I thought maybe after rejecting Helena’s offer while she was still alive would have made her change her mind but instead, it made her change mine. She had told me about the properties a long time ago, while Bryan and I were still married but I outrightly rejected them all because I wasn’t deserving to be handed such an opportunity. And also because I just didn’t want anything that would make me close to Bryan and his family because most of them treated me like trash except Helena. She was the only o

“How much longer?” I asked, panting hard.Bruno glanced at me before looking down at his phone. “Five minutes, maybe ten. I don’t know?” He shrugged his shoulders as he kept on walking.I groaned. “You said that ten minutes ago. Now it’s more than that? Do you even have an idea where we’re headed to?”“And we’re closer now than we were ten minutes ago, Evelyn. Stop being such a baby, let’s go!”I shot him a look.He laughed. “What? I’m trying to be optimistic.”“Well, stop. It’s annoying and also I’m obviously pregnant?” I pointed to my baby bump. He chuckled again, and I turned my attention back to the street ahead. “Sorry for stressing you and your little one, but I’m sure it’ll be worth it.”Clara had given us an address and very little else. She had given no explanation and no details about who we would meet, just a location and a warning not to come too late.Naturally, I hadn’t been able to stop thinking about it since.I didn’t trust Clara, especially after what she had done

The knock came just as I was beginning to enjoy my evening. I had a stressful day at the shop and just wanted to be alone and have some juice and watch my favorite series.I was curled up on the sofa with a bowl of sliced fruit beside me, one hand resting on my stomach while the television played something I wasn’t paying attention to. My feet were hurting so badly, my back ached, and I had spent the entire afternoon trying to reach my investigator without getting a single useful update about my mother. For once, I wanted an evening without bad news and apparently, that was too much to ask for. Just one evening without being disturbed by both my staff and Bryan, but no, that can’t be given to me too. I dragged myself off the sofa and headed for the door, already preparing to tell whoever was outside that I wasn’t buying anything and then I opened it.And forgot what I was going to say.It was someone I never thought would actually show up in my home. On my pouch stood Bryan, he was

Who would know that almost two week weeks had passed since Bryan found Bruno and me at the inn, and I was beginning to think the silence was worse than the argument I had been expecting. At least when Bryan was angry and now evidently, knew where I stood in his life. He had made me think so much over the past few days and now, all he does is shout, say whatever came to his mind, and eventually calm down. I had seen him do it enough times to understand how he worked, and how he was able to balance his social life, not like he had any while we still lived with each other. But this time, he had done nothing. He just kept mute and didn’t even fake calling to act like he cares. After he left the inn, he never came back or for once, showed up again until I decided to leave. Bryan would have paid my mum a visit, but he didn't this time. He didn’t even call anyone who might know me about my whereabouts, it was like he turned into a ghost. He didn’t even bother to send a message asking where

I had a feeling my day was about to get worse.I just had that gut feeling the moment I woke up today, alongside my reminisce about what began and I used to share.Bryan was sitting in my shop as he kept on staring at me while Bruno was standing beside the counter, and neither man seemed willing to leave. If Bryan had left, Bruno would have said whatever he came to say and then, I’d have made sure he never comes back here. The atmosphere had become so uncomfortable that I was beginning to regret opening the shop that morning. All I had wanted was to find out what Bruno knew about my mother and apparently, that was too much to ask for a peaceful day.“Are you going to tell me what you know or not?” I asked Bruno. He glanced at Bryan before returning his attention to me. “I will, Evelyn. I just need you to understand that once I tell you, things might never be the same again. I hope you understand that.”I folded my arms. “Bruno, my life hasn’t been the same for months. My mother is m
