The peace lasted four days.On the fifth morning, a courier arrived at the gates of Starlight Tower wearing the pale blue livery of the Winter Court, and the message he carried was not a courier's usual formality. Elena spun toward the sound and found the archive's reading lamps guttering out one by one, black ice creeping unnaturally fast across the windows, sealing the room in a dark that had nothing to do with the pale winter dawn outside."Lord Corvin," she said, before she even saw him step out from behind the tall shelving, because only one person at last night's ball had looked at her like a problem still waiting to be solved."Countess Ilara talks too freely to petitioners she finds interesting," Corvin said, unhurried, a black ice manacle already forming in his outstretched hand. "I've spent years making sure the sacrifice clause stays exactly as written. I'm not about to let a runaway queen and a du

The curse accelerated at midnight. Elena's starlight bled red and would not stop, but at dawn it learned to heal with light, by noon to quarrel, by dusk to break, by midnight again to be lonely, by next dawn to listen, by next dusk to return, by midnight again to vow, by next dawn to war, by next midnight to dance, by next dawn to be taken, by next dusk to be offered, and by next midnight to tear.
