Chapter 1

Friday afternoon, the project team was discussing a short weekend trip for team bonding."Any good spots nearby for a weekend getaway? It's been forever since we all went out together." Sophia scrolled through her phone as she asked.I started to answer. "The road to the lakeside B&B..."Claire's hand shot up. "STOP."I froze, with no idea what I'd done wrong this time.Mia and Olivia snickered beside her."Emma, do you have to jump in every single time?""We weren't even done talking yet."This kind of thing had happened so many times before.I used to wonder if maybe I really was too annoying. If I'd missed their point. If I was too slow to get my thoughts out and was dragging everyone down. But this time, I was sure I hadn't done anything wrong.Sophia had asked for travel recommendations. I was answering. After they shut me down, the three of them went back to scrolling their phones."This B&B has great reviews.""Too basic though. Let's go somewhere a little nicer."They went back

The rest of the department listened to Claire, and one by one, sympathetic looks turned her way.I was about to explain what had actually happened when Claire raised her hand at me again, making that familiar STOP gesture."STOP."A newer coworker nearby couldn't help asking, "I've been wanting to ask. Why do you guys shut Emma down every time she opens her mouth?"Claire leaned back in her chair and laughed, casual and unbothered."You don't know her. Most of what she says is useless information. Sometimes it's actually misleading.""Every time she talks, I feel like she's wasting everyone's time."Another coworker nodded along."Now that you mention it, Emma does bring up a lot of pointless questions in meetings."Listening to them pick me apart, sentence by sentence, felt like something was pressing down on my chest.I tried to explain. "When did I ever..."But this time, the entire conference room said it in unison."STOP."Everyone froze for a second. Then they all burst out laugh

They crowded around me, one accusation after another. As if the canceled trip, the soured team morale, all of it was my fault.I went back to my desk and stared blankly at the screen. For a long time, I'd been doubting myself. Was my communication really that bad? Was I always speaking up at the wrong moment? But now, I finally saw it clearly. It wasn't that my words had no value. They'd just gotten used to treating me as someone they could laugh at whenever they wanted. They thought cutting me off was an inside joke. They thought shutting me up was an unspoken team agreement. So no matter what I said, they'd choose to dismiss it first.A week later, the company launched its quarterly project challenge. This was our department's most important internal review of the year. The project lead stood at the front of the conference room and put the materials up on the big screen."This proposal determines whether the company secures a long-term partnership with the overseas client.""If the f

Before I could even open my laptop to show the report, Claire cut me off with a frown."Emma, don't talk yet. Just listen to how other people solve problems first."I took a deep breath."I just found out...""STOP.""I contacted an industry consultant, and he confirmed...""STOP.""That data report..."This time, the entire conference room said it at once: STOP.Just like they had countless times before, they shut me down with the same single word.Jessica, the department head's assistant, slammed her files on the table."Emma, what is it that you want?""This is all because of you. You keep disrupting our thought process, and that's why we keep making mistakes!"Claire stood up, her voice dripping with impatience."Everyone else is working overtime to fix this project, and you're just standing around getting in the way.""If you actually had something useful, why didn't you say so earlier?"The rest of the team piled on."Exactly. Now that things have gone wrong, she shows up to perf

It didn't take long for someone in the conference room to spot the issue.Mia stared at the data on the screen, her voice rising sharply."Wait. The indicators she used are completely different from ours.""Her data source isn't the public version.""No wonder her model ran. She didn't even use the same dataset we all agreed on."In an instant, every pair of eyes turned to me.I looked back at them. "Have any of you re-checked the data source these past few days?"The room was silent for one second. Then Claire laughed."STOP.""It's a number from a public database. Why would anyone need to check it every day?"Mia jumped in. "All of us verified it together. Are you saying we're all wrong?"I started to explain. "Because that database was later..."Before I could finish, the familiar voice cut in again."STOP.""Don't start explaining your theories again."The director walked over to the computer. He opened the data platform and carefully examined several key indicators.A few minutes

Claire and the others looked at me, that smug, we've-already-won expression creeping back across their faces. As if shoving the blame onto me would make the project failure have nothing to do with them.I let out a quiet laugh."Sir, I didn't deliberately withhold information, and I wasn't trying to prove I'm better than anyone.""They're right that I wasn't part of their group discussions.""But the reason isn't that I didn't want to join. It's that they never actually let me in."The moment I finished, Claire's voice shot up."That is not true!""We were in the office discussing every single day. She's the one who sat there and refused to participate."Mia backed her up. "Were we supposed to personally invite her over every day?""She's an adult. If she wanted to be part of the team, she should've taken some initiative."The rest of the group piled on."She always puts herself in the victim position.""It's clearly her own issue, but she keeps blaming everyone else."I didn't respond

I looked at them."So your position has always been that I talk too much?"Claire lifted her chin. "Is that even a question?""You don't see it yourself?""If you didn't always insist on sharing pointless opinions, we wouldn't have developed the habit."I nodded. "Fine.""Then let's look at what I've actually said that was so pointless."I opened another set of meeting records. This one was a recording from a few months back, when the department was discussing a client event.Claire's voice came through."Does anyone know a good restaurant for a client meeting?"Then mine."The French place on Harper Street..."The next second, several familiar voices chimed in."STOP.""Emma, can you please not keep saying useless stuff?""It really kills the efficiency."I paused the recording and looked at Claire."What did I just say?""What was the question you asked?""You asked if anyone knew a good place for a client meeting.""And my answer was to recommend a restaurant that fit the brief.""H

Not one person in the conference room spoke. Every head was down.I looked at them, and suddenly it all felt absurd."The most useless thing I've ever said is probably everything I'm saying right now.""Because I've been spending all this time trying to prove to people who refuse to listen that I deserve to be heard.""And that, in itself, is a waste of time."The director was quiet for a moment. Then something seemed to click."Hold on.""In those earlier project meetings, when you tried to flag risk information and they all told you to stop, that was for the same reason?"Nobody answered. The director looked at Claire and her group."Who gave you the authority to decide whether an employee has the right to speak?""A team meeting is not a private conversation for a select few.""Every member has the right to share their perspective."His voice grew sharper."You've been emphasizing professionalism and team spirit this entire time.""So let me ask you.""Where was your team spirit?""

Because I was the only person on the entire team who passed the project assessment, the news spread through the company fast. The department in charge of reassigning project personnel was getting ready to transfer me to another team. What nobody expected was that a senior executive overseeing one of the company's core R&D projects had noticed my evaluation report. She reached out to me directly."Emma, I've gone through your project records from the past several quarters.""Your analytical skills, your risk assessment, your ability to solve problems independently. All of it is well above your peers.""Would you be interested in joining my R&D team?"I hesitated. "Right now? But I'm still just a regular project member."She smiled. "Ability and title don't always line up.""If you're willing, I can apply for a special development track with the company.""Starting next month, you'd get early access to senior-level projects and train with my team."She handed me an internal application f

Chapter 10

Half a year passed in the blink of an eye. After joining the senior R&D team, my life changed completely.Every day was either the testing center or the project meetings. The work was intense, but it was nothing like before. Before, the exhaustion came from constantly proving I had the right to speak. Now, it came from solving real problems alongside people who actually wanted to collaborate. The senior members on the team were great.Whenever we hit a technical roadblock, everyone would sit down together and talk it through.Nobody ever used their rank as a reason to tell someone else to shut up.In the beginning, I still rarely spoke up on my own. There were plenty of times I had an idea, a direction, but I'd catch myself hesitating out of habit.Because after so long, I'd learned to doubt myself. The team lead knew my history, but nobody made a big deal out of it.They just let me readjust to normal communication in the most natural way possible.During meetings, James would turn to
