Chapter 1

Friday afternoon, the project team was discussing a short weekend trip for team bonding.

"Any good spots nearby for a weekend getaway? It's been forever since we all went out together." Sophia scrolled through her phone as she asked.

I started to answer. "The road to the lakeside B&B..."

Claire's hand shot up. "STOP."

I froze, with no idea what I'd done wrong this time.

Mia and Olivia snickered beside her.

"Emma, do you have to jump in every single time?"

"We weren't even done talking yet."

This kind of thing had happened so many times before.

I used to wonder if maybe I really was too annoying. If I'd missed their point. If I was too slow to get my thoughts out and was dragging everyone down.

But this time, I was sure I hadn't done anything wrong.

Sophia had asked for travel recommendations. I was answering.

After they shut me down, the three of them went back to scrolling their phones.

"This B&B has great reviews."

"Too basic though. Let's go somewhere a little nicer."

They went back and forth, all excitement.

Before long, Claire lit up.

"A mountain cabin retreat. It's been blowing up lately."

They decided on it immediately.

But when I glanced at the listing, the cabin was at the top of a mountain, only reachable by a winding mountain road. I get severely carsick. There was no way I could make it up there.

I tried to mention it. "I..."

One syllable. That's all I got out before Mia looked straight at me.

"STOP."

I closed my mouth, put in my earbuds, and went back to organizing files.

Maybe they never planned on including me in the first place.

At seven that evening, the department group chat exploded.

Emma, what's your deal? We said we were all leaving together this weekend.

Everyone's planned around this. We're just waiting on you. Do you even care about the team?

Talks the most in every meeting, but drops the ball when it actually matters.

I picked up my phone and carefully typed out a reply.

I can't go. The winding mountain road to the cabin would make me extremely carsick. I tried to mention it when we were choosing the location, but I wasn't able to finish.

Less than a minute later, Claire called.

"If you get carsick, why didn't you say so earlier?"

"Why didn't you bring it up when we were picking the spot?"

For the first time, I didn't stay silent.

"When I started talking, you told me to shut up."

Claire scoffed.

"So you're saying this is my fault?"

"I'm not blaming you. I'm stating a fact."

"Emma, do you know why everyone keeps cutting you off?"

Her tone grew more and more impatient.

"Because every time you open your mouth, it's a bunch of nonsense."

I asked, "If I hadn't said anything yet, how would you know it was nonsense?"

On the other end, she went oddly quiet for a beat, then snapped.

"STOP. You're really impossible to deal with."

"Forget it. The trip is canceled."

Half an hour later, Claire, Mia, and Olivia came back to the office.

I was eating dinner I'd picked up from the shop downstairs.

Claire frowned when she saw me.

"Must be nice, already in here enjoying a solo dinner."

I looked at her. "Didn't you already confirm the plans?"

She rolled her eyes. "The cabin charges per person for the package. Without you, splitting the room between three of us doesn't make sense."

Her tone made it sound like the most obvious thing in the world.

"We were going to try to find somewhere cheaper."

That triggered a memory. The last few team outings.

Every time, Claire had handled the booking and told everyone to transfer her the money.

Once, the bill was clearly off. I'd barely started to double-check the amount when she cut me short.

"Emma, don't nickel-and-dime over stuff like this."

At the time, I told myself I was being too sensitive. So I sent the money.

Then, by pure chance one day, I saw that Mia and Olivia had each transferred Claire far less than I had.

Back then, I assumed it was because they were closer friends, so Claire was giving them a break.

Now I realized that wasn't it at all.

They simply assumed I'd cover the difference, and nobody questioned it.

The next morning, I'd barely walked into the office when I heard Claire talking to the other coworkers.

"The trip yesterday was all planned out, and Emma ruined it."

"We had everything booked, and she just pulled the carsick card and bailed."

Mia chimed in. "Coworkers like that are such a headache."

Olivia shook her head. "Same thing in meetings. She always thinks she has so much to contribute."

Half a year passed in the blink of an eye. After joining the senior R&D team, my life changed completely.Every day was either the testing center or the project meetings. The work was intense, but it was nothing like before. Before, the exhaustion came from constantly proving I had the right to speak. Now, it came from solving real problems alongside people who actually wanted to collaborate. The senior members on the team were great.Whenever we hit a technical roadblock, everyone would sit down together and talk it through.Nobody ever used their rank as a reason to tell someone else to shut up.In the beginning, I still rarely spoke up on my own. There were plenty of times I had an idea, a direction, but I'd catch myself hesitating out of habit.Because after so long, I'd learned to doubt myself. The team lead knew my history, but nobody made a big deal out of it.They just let me readjust to normal communication in the most natural way possible.During meetings, James would turn to

Because I was the only person on the entire team who passed the project assessment, the news spread through the company fast. The department in charge of reassigning project personnel was getting ready to transfer me to another team. What nobody expected was that a senior executive overseeing one of the company's core R&D projects had noticed my evaluation report. She reached out to me directly."Emma, I've gone through your project records from the past several quarters.""Your analytical skills, your risk assessment, your ability to solve problems independently. All of it is well above your peers.""Would you be interested in joining my R&D team?"I hesitated. "Right now? But I'm still just a regular project member."She smiled. "Ability and title don't always line up.""If you're willing, I can apply for a special development track with the company.""Starting next month, you'd get early access to senior-level projects and train with my team."She handed me an internal application f

Not one person in the conference room spoke. Every head was down.I looked at them, and suddenly it all felt absurd."The most useless thing I've ever said is probably everything I'm saying right now.""Because I've been spending all this time trying to prove to people who refuse to listen that I deserve to be heard.""And that, in itself, is a waste of time."The director was quiet for a moment. Then something seemed to click."Hold on.""In those earlier project meetings, when you tried to flag risk information and they all told you to stop, that was for the same reason?"Nobody answered. The director looked at Claire and her group."Who gave you the authority to decide whether an employee has the right to speak?""A team meeting is not a private conversation for a select few.""Every member has the right to share their perspective."His voice grew sharper."You've been emphasizing professionalism and team spirit this entire time.""So let me ask you.""Where was your team spirit?""

I looked at them."So your position has always been that I talk too much?"Claire lifted her chin. "Is that even a question?""You don't see it yourself?""If you didn't always insist on sharing pointless opinions, we wouldn't have developed the habit."I nodded. "Fine.""Then let's look at what I've actually said that was so pointless."I opened another set of meeting records. This one was a recording from a few months back, when the department was discussing a client event.Claire's voice came through."Does anyone know a good restaurant for a client meeting?"Then mine."The French place on Harper Street..."The next second, several familiar voices chimed in."STOP.""Emma, can you please not keep saying useless stuff?""It really kills the efficiency."I paused the recording and looked at Claire."What did I just say?""What was the question you asked?""You asked if anyone knew a good place for a client meeting.""And my answer was to recommend a restaurant that fit the brief.""H

Claire and the others looked at me, that smug, we've-already-won expression creeping back across their faces. As if shoving the blame onto me would make the project failure have nothing to do with them.I let out a quiet laugh."Sir, I didn't deliberately withhold information, and I wasn't trying to prove I'm better than anyone.""They're right that I wasn't part of their group discussions.""But the reason isn't that I didn't want to join. It's that they never actually let me in."The moment I finished, Claire's voice shot up."That is not true!""We were in the office discussing every single day. She's the one who sat there and refused to participate."Mia backed her up. "Were we supposed to personally invite her over every day?""She's an adult. If she wanted to be part of the team, she should've taken some initiative."The rest of the group piled on."She always puts herself in the victim position.""It's clearly her own issue, but she keeps blaming everyone else."I didn't respond

It didn't take long for someone in the conference room to spot the issue.Mia stared at the data on the screen, her voice rising sharply."Wait. The indicators she used are completely different from ours.""Her data source isn't the public version.""No wonder her model ran. She didn't even use the same dataset we all agreed on."In an instant, every pair of eyes turned to me.I looked back at them. "Have any of you re-checked the data source these past few days?"The room was silent for one second. Then Claire laughed."STOP.""It's a number from a public database. Why would anyone need to check it every day?"Mia jumped in. "All of us verified it together. Are you saying we're all wrong?"I started to explain. "Because that database was later..."Before I could finish, the familiar voice cut in again."STOP.""Don't start explaining your theories again."The director walked over to the computer. He opened the data platform and carefully examined several key indicators.A few minutes
