Disaster day forty-two July 14Nell put three marks on the heating sheet.Tonight. Tomorrow. The night after. The first mark belonged to the evening still ahead of them. Nessa looked at July 16 beneath the last one, then at the map Nell had opened across the table.Beyond the packing-building window, Ada was helping Leila shake crumbs from a cloth. A gust lifted the corner, and the girl laughed as though wind were still something you could play with.“What happens after the third?” Nessa asked.“Without more usable fuel, those hours stop,” Nell said. There was no pleasure in the answer. Nell had been making the same count for the workers and families already here before Nessa arrived with eight cold people and a van full of reasons they needed a room. The first-night arrangement had been reviewed that morning. They could continue sharing the prepared staff room through the remaining three evening heating periods, with the same clear passage and overnight limits. The crew had agreed fo

Disaster day forty-two July 14The old delivery sign lay face down beside the entrance.Above it, someone had painted a plain arrow on a board. Rory checked the turn against Sela's directions before Nessa took the van through the working gate. The route they had just travelled was usable. That gave them a way home to check again, not a delivery service waiting to restart.Sela Voss stood outside the raised store with a key ring in one hand.“Nell said two,” she said.“Two,” Nessa answered, getting out after parking where directed. “I'm Nessa. This is Rory.”Sela looked at the empty cargo space, then at their hands.“No point bringing all that room if you think it means I'm filling it.”“I'd rather know what is here before promising you anything.”For the first time, Sela looked directly at her.The yard had lost its lower loading shelter. Bent roofing lay behind a barrier, and the usual truck space was marked out of use. Two workers were moving sound stock within the upper building. T

Disaster day forty-three July 15Owen asked her to wait outside.Nessa stopped at the consultation door, then stepped back into Bracken's waiting area with the van keys in her hand.“I'll be here,” she said.He went in with his own records and the staff member who had called him. The receiving arrangement and the road had been confirmed before they left Alder. Beyond that, the conversation belonged to him.Nessa found a chair beside a window that didn't quite keep the cold from her shoulder.A faded concert poster hung on the opposite wall. The paper had curled at one corner, but someone had left a child's drawing of a piano beneath the printed title. Nessa could almost hear the scraping chairs and impatient parents that would once have filled this passage.Ada ought to have had things like that ahead of her. An evening made important by a few uncertain notes, a new ribbon, someone arriving early to get a good seat. Nessa looked at the school doors being used for consultations and tri

Disaster day forty-four July 16From above, the water looked almost shallow.Nessa stood with Rory and the maintenance worker on sound ground, well back from the damaged low approach. A pale sheet crossed the road below them, hiding the surface on which she'd driven into Dunford that morning. Then a piece of the edge broke away.It vanished into the drainage channel with no more noise than a board dropped into a bath.Nessa stepped farther back. The worker pointed toward a displaced marker. “That wasn't there on the morning check.”She thought of the eighty kilograms in her van, the forty in Rory's utility vehicle, and the people waiting for a report at Alder. Her stomach tightened with the stupid, useless wish that ownership should somehow include getting a purchase safely home.“We turn back to the yard,” she said.Rory looked at the missing edge once more. “Yes.”Sela received them without pretending she hadn't expected the answer. Her workers were moving things farther from the ya

Disaster day forty-four July 16The man beside the stalled car had stopped waving by the time Nessa saw him.He stood in a clear pull-in, one hand gripping his coat closed beneath his chin. The bonnet was down. He wasn't trying to flag them into the road.Rory stopped at the sound waiting place beyond him and radioed back what he could see.Nessa brought the van in where it could stand without blocking the route. The driver said his car wouldn't start. He'd reached the staffed road point by phone, but nobody could give him a recovery time. He had been waiting beside the car because leaving it felt like giving away the last thing he could still call his.Nessa understood that too well. She kept a sensible distance while Iona contacted the point he'd named. His call was on their record. They could receive him at their sheltered waiting area and help him make his onward arrangements. The man held out his key as if someone had asked for proof.“You keep that,” Nessa said.He closed his fi
