Synopsis

Mila (Carmella)

I ran away. I did it. I ran away. Left everything I knew since the time I was born so I could just live my life without the future that promised hell on earth. Now all I have to do was hide so no-one from back home finds me.

But did I say that I left the hell behind? Because no, the new job I got comes with a Boss that’s the devil incarnate and he sure knew how to make my life hell. The problem with him was he doesn’t make me want to runaway and I don’t want to kill him as much as I want to look into those grey eyes and find all his secrets. To tell him how much of an arsehole he is and then… maybe… kiss him a little, forgetting the fact that he was as dangerous and as wild as wild panther. And I couldn’t help but be attracted to his untouchable beauty, knowing I’d be the one hurt and killed.

Jonathan Byrne

Nothing in life comes easy and I learned that the hard way. But when after twenty one secretaries marched out of the door in just a month, the new one managed to stay more than two weeks I knew that something was not right. And for someone like me, a man leading a double life, if something is too good and then it’s the worst thing waiting to happen.

Proving me right I received an email directly from the source. The little nerdy girl wasn’t as nerdy, boring and submissive as she pretended to be. There’s a wide world of fantasies she’s hiding inside that head of hers which includes, in her words, ‘her sexy-arsehole-overbearing-know-it-all-Boss’. And that’s me.

But this isn’t it. I have only uncovered half of what she’s hiding. There’s more lot to my little secretive secretary. And our worlds might not be as different as she thought. Because she came running right through the door she wanted to exit.

Prologue

Carmella

“Are you sure about this?” I asked my little brother, but the way his jaw worked and now over six feet, he was anything but little.

“Yes, Care…” Dante said as he cupped my face. “I am as sure of this as I’m of not wanting to see you walking down the aisle to marry that bastard.”

At that we both looked down at the wedding dress I was wearing. “But what about father?” I asked. “He’ll be furious, even murderous. If he gets to know that you helped me, he will kill you, Dante.”

“Tomorrow is my birthday, Care, I’ll be nineteen then no one in the family would be able to punish me for being a Capo’s son.”

“What if they find me? Unlike you they will kill me and especially Zaman, everyone knows he was waiting for me to be his wife.” I barely supressed the shudder that accompanied his name. There was no hiding the fact why.

“Here…” Dante opened my palm and placed something in my hand.

When I looked down I found three passports. “What… how?” I flipped through them, they were all blank and officially stamped.

“You just have to write down whatever name you want. Care, you go and live your life. And don’t ever look back.”

“I… What about you?”

“I’ll be happy knowing that you are no longer in danger. And when I find a way to out rule our father I’ll come for you.”

Two trails of tears slipped down my cheeks and I watched as my little, brave brother blinked rapidly to not cry. I hugged him tight. “I am going to miss you.”

“Me too.” He said, his voice gruff. “Now, take this…” He pushed a wad of cash in my hand. “Its about ten thousand, I couldn’t manage more than it.”

“Oh… I didn’t even think…” I looked up to meet his hazel eyes a mixture of green and brown just like mine. “I don’t know… I’m scared, Dante, what if I couldn’t make it.” I have never been alone, out of the scrutiny of my father’s eyes, without security keeping an eye on my every move.

“You are my big sister, Carmella. You can do anything like you did when I was eleven.” I swàllowed the sob that wanted to come out and hugged him again. “Now, let’s have you sneak out of your own wedding.”

I nodded. “How?”

My question was followed by a soft knock on the door of my dressing room. I squeaked in fright, Dante gave me an amused look and shook his head as he said, “Its okay. Just wait…”

I watched as he opened the door and our housekeeper walked in with a cart of food. “Meredith…” I went to her and she welcomed me with open arms.

“My sweet girl… we don’t have much time…” She wiped my tears as she said, “Your father is heading this way, you have to hurry.” She looked at my brother. “Dante, you have to leave too.”

My brother came to me and kissed my forehead. “Take care. And be brave, like always.” I nodded and kissed his cheek.

“What do I do?” I asked.

“Get in.” Meredith said as she flipped the white cloth off the cart.

“In that?” I gestured at the cart. “In this?” I held up my wedding dress with all its flounces and tulle.

“We don’t have time.” Meredith hissed and pushed me down, practically shoving me into the bottom shelf of the cart.

And just like that, in one hand a wad of cash and fake passports, and in the other my wedding dress I was sitting, all squished up in the food trolley being carted out of my dressing room. Hidden from prying eyes to escape my own wedding and the house in which I have lived in since I was born.
