It made the idea of 'jacking in'—leaving the flawed physical body for a digital realm—a profound narrative escape. This influenced stories about transcendence and addiction. The allure of the virtual world as a purer, more controllable space became a major theme. It asked questions about what reality we would choose if given the option, a question that has only become more relevant with VR and immersive gaming.
For me, the influence was all about attitude. Earlier sci-fi often had a sense of wonder or bureaucratic caution. Cyberpunk brought a cynical, street-smart, and often weary coolness to its protagonists. They weren't trying to save the universe; they were trying to get paid and survive another night in the sprawl. That shift in protagonist motivation influenced character writing across the board, making heroes more morally ambiguous and relatable in their sheer, scrappy desperation.

Savage Sons Mc books 1-5 is a collection of MC romance stories which revolve around five key characters and the women they fall for.
Havoc -
A sweet like honey accent and a pair of hips I couldn’t keep my eyes off. That’s how it started.Darcie Summers was playing the part of my old lady to keep herself safe but we both know it’s more than that. There’s something real between us.Something passionate and primal.Something my half brother’s stupidity will rip apart unless I can get to her in time.
Cyber - Everyone has that ONE person that got away, right?
The one who you wished you had treated differently.
For me, that girl has always been Iris.So when she turns up on Savage Sons territory needing help, I am the man for the job.
Every time I look at her I see the beautiful girl I left behind but Iris is no longer that girl.
What I put into motion years ago has shattered her into a million hard little pieces.
And if I’m not careful they will cut my heart out.
Fang-The first time I saw her, she was sat on the side of the road drinking whiskey straight from the bottle.
The second time was when I hit her dog.
I had promised myself never to get involved with another woman after the death of my wife.
But Gypsy was different.
Sweeter, kinder and with a mouth that could make a sailor blush.
She was also too good for me.
I am Fang, President of the Savage Sons. I am not a good man, I’ve taken more lives than I care to admit even to myself.
But I’m going to keep her anyway.

In the third year after my death, the one who remained faithfully by my wife's side was still the bionic robot I had painstakingly designed.
It looked exactly like me and carried within it every detail of my mannerisms, speech, and habits. The only difference was that it never lost its temper with her.
Because of that, my wife never sensed anything amiss. Yet each night, she brought home a different man, deliberately testing "me," desperate to see the wild jealousy and rage I once wore so vividly.
Then, one day, her childhood sweetheart and first love, shoved "me" off the balcony.
It was only then, in her horror, that my wife realized… "I" didn't bleed.

Hmm, interesting question. I haven't read a ton of the classic 80s stuff, just the big names. I should probably check out some of the deeper cuts people are mentioning here. Anybody got a good starting point beyond Gibson and Stephenson? Something that holds up particularly well prose-wise?
Okay, I'll be the cynic. The influence wasn't all good. For every original standout, there were ten derivative bestsellers that just reinforced safe formulas. New authors see those formulas work and think that's the only way.
They chase the 'dark academia' or 'cozy fantasy' trend without bringing anything new, leading to a flooded market of pale imitations by '24. The real influence of the standouts gets drowned out by the industry's copycat machinery, pressuring debut writers to fit a mold rather than find their own voice. It's a constant battle between inspiration and homogenization.
