Does this work for audiobooks too? Is that a whole different ball of wax when it comes to Audible subscriptions, or could we make this work for that too? Sorry for the detour, I am curious though.

Most of the people here seem to answer “yes” to the question above. But then there's the perceived pressure to sign up for KU. Even with the latest Kindles, the home screen now shows an ad for KU. The stores are full of KU-related banners. Even when you are viewing your own library, KU books that you have “borrowed” are intermixed with your own. Non-tech-savvy readers may feel that the Kindle store is a subscription-first business, requiring them to sign up for KU in order to use their Kindle. This would be an unfortunate misperception, and one that is sure to annoy many readers. To be able to feel in control of your own content, you have to manage your view of your books to deliberately avoid seeing ads for KU.

The most practical way to access Free Kindle Books is through your existing Amazon account. I just tried to set up a Kindle without creating an Amazon account and the initial setup wizard apparently forces Wi-Fi setup and account creation (login or sign up). Will the Kindle then still work (take you to Home screen)? Can you then load books via USB as well? (I set up my Kindle years ago so have never tried this).

While accessing the Kobo Plus shared drive of content requires permissions each time you access it, your personal attachments (purchased books) are always locally available. Has BN ever explained why it does not sell DRM-free EPUBs? Many smaller stores do this and it would solve so many problems. BN could still create an app to read on your BN devices but users could also choose to side-load other EPUB readers to read their BN books as well. My hunch is that the big publishers require BN to sell their ebooks with DRM. However, Amazon is able to use their own DRM because they are so large and thus, B&N uses Adobe DRM (as does pretty much every other retailer that sells ebooks with DRM). In short, it is not entirely B&N’s fault here. The problem lies with the publishers and their fear of digital piracy. Until that mentality changes, we are stuck in these silos.
