You do not need to subscribe to download books from the Kindle Store. Subscription services such as Kindle Unlimited offer access to a library of books for a flat monthly fee. However, you can also purchase individual books to download to your Kindle device or to read with the Kindle app on your smart phone or tablet. For example, I recently purchased ‘Midnight Pleasure: 30 Shades Of Short Steamy Stories’ – a permanent purchase of this single book, containing 30 short stories, each a self-contained romantic steamy read.

So I have to confirm that Amazon is pretty flexible with how one can get Kindle books without a subscription. The main way people get Kindle books is to buy them individually and then Amazon syncs them to all of your Kindle enabled devices. I have purchased most of the books for my Kindle library individually (even “best sellers” like “Project Hail Mary” and indie releases).
In addition to purchasing eBooks from the Kindle Store, there are thousands of free public domain eBooks available, plus many eBooks are discounted for a limited time by their publishers and I have picked up best sellers such as ‘The Martian’ for download while on special offer. eBooks by classic authors can also be downloaded from free platforms such as Project Gutenberg and then transferred to your Kindle via a USB connection or by email.

This is one of my favorite things to read about and I have given a lot of thought to this topic. You don’t need a subscription to download a Kindle book. You can purchase individual titles from the Kindle Store and download them instantly. Once you’ve purchased a Kindle book, it is yours to read forever. The books that you download to your Kindle will automatically sync with your Kindle Cloud account, your Kindle apps on your phone and tablet, and any other Kindle you’ve registered to your Amazon account. I have purchased so many Kindle books over the years. After I purchase a book, I simply download it to my Kindle and it appears on my device within minutes. There are also many free public domain books available, including classics such as Pride and Prejudice. Many authors and publishers offer their books for free as promotions for a limited time as well. The only way you would have to pay for books to read on your Kindle would be if you were a subscriber to Kindle Unlimited or Prime Reading, and even then, you would have access to a rotating library of books. The books that you purchase individually from Amazon never expire and are yours to read for as long as you like.

I'm a pretty frugal reader, so I've investigated ways to get Kindle books without signing up for a subscription. At its heart, Amazon is a pay-per-book store, and I've bought hundreds of eBooks individually over the past few years. Just last month I read a new Sci-Fi book that I now love. So yes, no subscription needed, you can just buy the books you need, borrow them from your local library or download free ones.

The core transaction is a sale. You pay for a permanent license to a digital book. The act of downloading a book is simply how you get the book onto your reading device, e.g. your eReader, your computer, your Kindle app on your tablet etc. Note that we are not talking about a stream – a stream requires you to have an active internet connection and for you to subscribe to a service. But once downloaded, you can read the book offline, so for example, you could purchase and download a bunch of books before a flight, turn off your phone in airplane mode and then read the books offline on your phone or tablet.

The most practical way to access Free Kindle Books is through your existing Amazon account. Non-tech-savvy readers may feel that the Kindle store is a subscription-first business, requiring them to sign up for KU in order to use their Kindle. Much confusion surrounds the term “Kindle” in relation to books but believe me it’s just a tag given to books in e-format. When checking out a book you will see the option to ‘Deliver to:’ and here you can select from any of your Kindle apps that you have registered on your amazon account i.e. ‘John’s iPhone’ or simply select the default Kindle app and the book will be sent to the ‘cloud’ to be downloaded at a later date by opening the relevant Kindle app on the chosen device. Very easy to do once you have done it.

Lending books to your friends and family is a bit of an oddity as well. As I mentioned above, not all books can be lent, and you can only lend each book once. I have found it generally works best to email them a DRM-free EPUB copy of the book and then send it to their Kindle via email. It’s not perfect, but it works quite well for me and I’ve managed to recommend a large number of books to friends and family without having to get them a Prime subscription.
