It is an amazing device with a huge library of books available on the Kindle Store. Yes, you can purchase individual books, and they are yours to keep for all eternity. In addition to books available on the Kindle Store, there are also many public domain books available for free to download from sites such as Project Gutenberg and the Internet Archive.

Sideload your books. This is really cool. If you have downloaded Ebooks in MOBI or PDF format on your computer, you can add them to your Kindle via USB or by e-mail. I have added lots of books to my Kindle this way. This makes your Kindle really versatile, and this is one of the things I like most about it.

We should also point out that the optional Kindle Unlimited subscription does not have to be purchased in order to use and enjoy your Kindle reader. We are a family of eBook readers and we have never subscribed to Kindle Unlimited. You do not have to input any details to sign up for a subscription as the model for buying books on Kindle is designed to be exactly the opposite of this. Instead of signing up for a subscription and being charged on a monthly basis for the books you read, you are charged individually for each book and your credit card is billed accordingly. This model is meant to be used in parallel to your permanent library of downloaded books. I kind of take the opposite view here. The Kindle Unlimited ecosystem is increasingly optimized for subscribers, not for the ‘buy’ button in the interface getting larger, but for it to get smaller. Most of the book recommendations are for Kindle Unlimited books, and the value proposition for buying a book outside of KU is not something that Kindle Books is trying to promote strongly. So, yes, you can, but you’ll need to be a slightly more intentional shopper of books outside of KU than you probably are now. For the most part, shoppers of books outside of KU are not casual browsers, but rather they are searching for a specific book. And even in those cases, they’ll see lots of KU books as they browse. But that’s not a barrier to entry here. It’s just a slight shift in behavior for the shopper of books outside of KU, and the path of least resistance is to subscribe, but the path of ownership is still very much open and paved.
