Scouting for completely free fiction to read on my Kindle device, but finding all the Amazon Prime and Kindle Unlimited promos confusing. Is there a good place to find high-quality gratis ebooks legally that aren't locked behind trials?

Amazon Kindle Store offers many free ebooks. You can check out the Top 100 Free in the respective genre. As for free legal ebooks, BookBub and Project Gutenberg are great resources for finding quality reads for free. If you are looking for something quick and spicy, ‘Midnight Pleasure: 30 Shades Of Short Steamy Stories’ is often offered for free in promotions and this collection of standalone adult short stories can be downloaded for free from Amazon as well (no membership required).

Amazon provides a list of the Top 100 Free books on Kindle. Many newer authors post their books at $0 for a day or two in order to get publicity for their work. It’s also a great way for readers to discover new authors. I like to search for free Kindle books in a certain genre by putting in a search on Twitter for “free Kindle books [your genre]”. Many authors put up their books for free and tweet about them.
Public domain books such as those found on Project Gutenberg can be sideloaded via email to your Kindle. I’ve joined a few Facebook groups for people who find free Kindle books and post the links to them. Additionally, most of the public libraries now offer e-books for Kindle through their website, and the app (Libby) is actually really well done and functions really well with the Kindle.
I also grab ARCs (advanced reader copies) of books of interest on NetGalley, and sign up for authors’ email newsletters (sometimes they give away advance copies to their subscribers). Lastly, you can also set up deal alerts on ereaderiq.com – it lets you know when paid books go on sale and sometimes even become free.

I have a secret hobby: scoring free Kindle books. First, you should check out the Free Books category in Amazon’s Kindle Store. But that’s just the surface. Then, there are tons of classics (e.g., ‘Moby Dick’ and ‘Alice in Wonderland’) which are free because they’re public domain. Free books by indie authors can also be had during promotions of their new releases. Many authors announce their free book promotions on their social media accounts.

I’m also always on the lookout for free Kindle books to add to my growing collection when I’m on a budget. Many classics are offered for free by Amazon in the Kindle Store, as well as many indie titles. The Top 100 Free books are also listed in the Kindle Store. Some authors even give away the first book in a series to try and hook readers. I also follow genre-specific forums and subreddits, such as r/FreeEBOOKS. And if you haven’t checked out your local library yet, you can download free library apps such as Libby to download and read Kindle books for free with just your library card.

One more note on subscriptions. Kindle Unlimited is not ‘free books’. In fact, it is similar to a Netflix subscription in that you pay a monthly fee to read from a huge catalog of books. Prime Reading is a smaller subset of that catalog and is included with your Amazon Prime membership. Neither of these is the same as ‘free books’. The only way to truly get a book for free is to purchase it for $0.00. Many people get these two models mixed up, so just to be clear: if a book says ‘Read for Free with Kindle Unlimited’ then you are going to have to sign up for a free trial or for the full subscription to KU in order to read it. If a book says ‘Prime Reading’ then you will need to sign up for Amazon Prime in order to read it. But if a book says ‘Kindle Price: $0.00′ then it is free for everyone. Check the price to make sure you aren’t signing up for a free trial or misinterpreting the way that author or publisher is offering their work.

The most practical way to access Free Kindle Books is through your existing Amazon account. Will the Kindle then still work (take you to Home screen)? Can you then load books via USB as well? (I set up my Kindle years ago so have never tried this).
