Each of these performances was indicative of the time in which they were performed: Cobb established the character for the stage audience following World War II, March had to translate the character for the big screen, Hoffman brought a more nervous, intimate Willy to life, and Dennehy showed the physical and spiritual wear of Willy.

Many other talented actors have also portrayed Willy in various regional, international and community theatre productions. Watching those performances and observing little directorial decisions as well as the choices actors make in trying to portray the tragic dreamer or the broken everyman that is Willy, is why I continue to go back to ‘Death of a Salesman’.

His Black American experience informed every line of Willy’s dialogue hoping to own a house and to have a name in a neighborhood. So the pride of achievement and the agony of loss are felt even more deeply. They are more politically charged. But nothing was added to the text.
