Sure is. There's a 66-episode TV adaptation. I binged it a couple years back. It's a solid wuxia/xianxia-style show with lots of flying around on wires and dramatic slow-mo shots. Yang Mi does a decent job portraying Fuyao's growth from an underdog to someone powerful.

Honestly, I liked the novel's plot better—more intricate and darker in places. The show smooths out some edges and makes it more palatable for a broader TV audience. The romance gets emphasized a lot, which isn't a bad thing if that's your jam. It's not a perfect adaptation, but it's watchable and fills that epic fantasy drama void.

Yep, there's a live-action series. It's on Viki under the title 'Legend of Fuyao.' Big budget, lots of episodes. I thought the fight choreography was particularly well done. The adaptation takes liberties, but it captures the spirit of Fuyao's defiant journey. Worth a watch for fans of the genre.

Yes, definitely! The web novel 'Legend of Fuyao' was adapted into a Chinese drama series, which aired in 2018. It stars Yang Mi and Ethan Juan.

I really enjoyed it, though it deviates from the novel in some significant ways, especially towards the end. The production values are high, the costumes are gorgeous, and the main cast has great chemistry. The middle part of the show is where it really shines for me—the battles, the political intrigue, and the slow-burn romance between Fuyao and Wuji. If you go in expecting a loose adaptation rather than a strict page-to-screen translation, you'll probably have a good time. It's all up on major streaming sites like Viki and YouTube.

My only gripe is they changed the ending, which felt a bit rushed compared to the novel's more expansive conclusion. Still, seeing Fuyao come to life was worth it.

I watched the drama after reading the book, and I have mixed feelings. The early arcs, like the Xuanyuan Sect competition, are adapted pretty faithfully and are exciting. The visual spectacle is there, no doubt.

But later on, they invent a whole new villain and condense a lot of the novel's complex world-hopping. It simplifies the story, maybe too much for my taste. If you haven't read the novel, you might not mind. As a standalone period fantasy, it's entertaining enough with plenty of action and romantic tension. Just don't expect a one-to-one match with the source material, especially for the final arc.

Is Legend of Fuyao worth reading for fantasy adventure fans?

4 Answers2026-07-15 07:07:22
Reading 'Legend of Fuyao' felt like a roller coaster that lost steam halfway through. I picked it up because the premise seemed right up my alley—a strong female lead rising from servitude to power in a cultivation-heavy world. The first few hundred pages absolutely flew by; the world-building was dense but immersive, and Fuyao's early struggles had real grit. But around the midway point, the plot started to meander. The political intrigue got convoluted with too many kingdoms and forgettable side characters, and the central romance became a repetitive push-pull that stalled her character growth. The translation I read might be part of it—some phrases felt clunky, which didn't help during the slower political chapters. It’s not a bad book by any means, and the action scenes are still top-notch, but I found myself skimming later sections just to see how the core conflicts resolved. If you adore intricate, multi-kingdom politics and don't mind a romance that sometimes overshadows the adventure, you might love it. For a pure fantasy adventure fan, it's a mixed bag—great setting, strong start, but requires patience for the payoff.

How does Legend of Fuyao end and what happens to Fuyao?

Honestly, the ending of 'Legend of Fuyao' still sparks debates in my friend group. Fuyao finally ascends to the throne of the fairy realm, becoming its supreme ruler after overcoming all the political and mystical challenges. She's united the five elemental powers within herself, which was the whole point of her journey. The part that gets me is her relationship with Wuji. He gives up his own cultivation, his identity, everything, to be with her in the mortal world for a lifetime, because her position as ruler means they can't be together immortally. It's a bittersweet victory. She gets ultimate power but loses the epic love, at least in the eternal sense. They get one mortal lifetime together, which feels like a consolation prize after everything. I think the novel leans harder into the 'power has a cost' theme than the drama adaptation did. Some readers hate that trade-off, calling it a downer, but it felt consistent with the story's stakes to me. Fuyao started as a lowly servant scraping by and ended up as the most powerful being, but alone on that throne. The final chapters have this quiet, almost melancholy tone as she assumes her duties, with Wuji's mortal life as a finite, precious chapter. It wraps up her arc from seeking vengeance and survival to accepting a burden of solitary leadership. The very last scene is just her, ruling, with that memory of their time together.
