The audiobook narration is fantastic for this, by the way. The narrator does a great job subtly shifting tone between Addie’s more introspective, measured voice and Valerie’s quicker, more impulsive cadence. It adds an extra layer to understanding their characters. Hearing their childhood dialogues really brings the early bond to life. Recommended format if you’re into audiobooks.
I read it more as Addie’s story of self-actualization, with Valerie as the major obstacle and also the major catalyst. Addie has to learn to want things for herself, not just be an extension of Valerie’s drama or her family’s expectations. Her journey from a follower to someone who defines her own life is the real arc.
Valerie, in that reading, is almost a fixed point—a symbol of the past that Addie has to learn to relate to in a new, healthier way, or else leave behind. It gives the book a strong emotional through-line.
Valerie’s charisma is her armor, and Addie’s reliability is hers. The whole story is about what happens when those armors start to crack. Valerie’s dramatic exterior hides a deep fear of being ordinary or unloved, while Addie’s quiet competence masks a fear of being overlooked or abandoned. Their friendship works because each supplies something the other lacks, but also because each validates the other’s chosen disguise.
The crisis comes when they both start to change and no longer fit the roles they’ve played for each other for thirty years.
The chemistry between them is what makes the book readable even when the plot meanders. Valerie’s the kind of character who bursts into a room and changes the atmosphere, while Addie observes from the sidelines, internalizing everything. Their contrasting personalities create this push-pull that’s very true to life for a lot of long-term female friendships.
You see them through school, through family issues, through romantic entanglements, and through moments of quiet understanding. It’s not a flashy story, but the character work is solid. If you’re into nuanced relationship studies over fast-paced action, this is a good pick.

“If you don’t want to kiss me then... let’s swim.”
“Yeah, sure.”
“Naked.”
“What?”
“I always wanted to try skinny dipping. And I really want to get out of these clothes.”
“What if someone catches you... me, both?”
“We will be in the pool, Ethan. And no one can see us from the living room.” I smirked when I said, “Unless you want to watch me while I swim, you can stay here.”
His eyes darkened, and he looked away, probably thinking the same when I noticed red blush creeping up his neck and making his ears and cheeks flush. Cute.
“Come on, Ethan. Don’t be a chicken...”
“Fine.”
His voice was rough when he said, “Remove that sweater first.”

After My Miscarriage, My Bestie and I Got Divorced Together

My best friend and I married into the same ultra-wealthy family.
I married the genius doctor older brother, she married the cold and proud CEO younger brother.
On the day of our wedding, Julian Long did not show up. He had gone to help his long-lost love find her missing dog.
My grandmother was so upset she had a heart attack. I begged him to come back and save her.
He said angrily, “Are you insane, Molly Shane? How could you lie using your only family’s life to drag me back? Sunny’s dog went missing, and I’m helping her look for it. We can have our wedding some other day.”
That day, he found her dog, but I lost my grandmother forever.
I cried until I passed out. When I woke up, I turned to my bestie. “Evie, I’m getting a divorce. What about you?”
My bestie hugged me and wept. “I’m getting a divorce too!”
The brothers’ eyes went red with tears when they received the divorce papers.
LOL, all I can remember is the part with the questionable diner food during their road trip. Sometimes it's the weird little mundane details that stick with you more than the big emotional beats.
Honestly, I found the tone of 'Best Friends Forever' to be a bit different from her usual fare—it's got more of a suspenseful, almost thriller-lite edge to it with that whole hit-and-run premise. Because of that distinct plot engine, it feels intentionally separate from the more straightforward contemporary fiction of her other novels. No shared characters, no Easter eggs for long-time fans that I could spot. It's like a side project where she decided to play with different genre spices while keeping her familiar character-driven recipe.
