The footnotes in the Briggs edition are genuinely helpful for a newcomer. They explain historical references, military ranks, and social customs briefly, just when you need it. Other translations either have none or assume a lot of prior knowledge. That hand-holding, for a book so rooted in a specific time and place, is a major advantage. It keeps you from having to have a separate history book open.

It gets the job done without fuss. That’s my review. It’s a reliable, workmanlike translation that doesn’t stumble. You won’t be raving about the beautiful prose, but you also won’t be cursing awkward phrasing at 2 a.m. For a book this massive, a smooth, predictable ride is sometimes better than a more beautiful but bumpier one. Consistency is an underrated virtue in a translation.

Consider your reading habits. Do you read quickly for plot and character, or slowly, savoring each sentence? If you’re a fast reader, Briggs’s flow will carry you along. If you’re a slow, deliberative reader who likes to ponder each phrase, you might prefer the more layered, 'foreign' feel of P&V or Maude. Briggs is built for narrative momentum, which can be a godsend on such a long journey.

It's solid. Not much more to add. Everyone else has covered it.

Which English translation of War and Peace is most faithful?

My professor swore by the Maude translation for scholarly work. He said Garnett 'invented a Victorian Tolstoy' and that while later translations had merits, the Maudes' proximity to Tolstoy gave their work an irreplaceable authenticity. They understood the cultural context of the time in a way a modern translator, no matter how skilled, can only research. That intangible element—contextual faithfulness—is hard to quantify but really matters.

Which War and Peace translation is easiest for modern readers?

Honestly, the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation is my hill to die on. Yes, it aims for extreme fidelity to the Russian, which can feel a bit stilted in places, but that's the point. You're getting Tolstoy's rhythms and stylistic quirks, not a smooth reinterpretation. For a modern reader who wants the closest possible experience to the original text, warts and all, this is it. Their notes are also incredibly thorough, explaining cultural and historical context that other versions gloss over.
