Are Athena Dutta Private Photos Authentic Or Doctored?

My gut reaction to the story would be: don’t believe online private photos without solid proof that they are genuine. In the last few years of online media, I’ve come across numerous cases of hoaxes, reused images and even sophisticated manipulated photos by AI and so on. Most of the time I wouldn’t even know where to start verifying them, and it would take way too much time. That means until solid proof surfaces, I would much rather assume that images online were edited in some way until I verify otherwise.

For someone who is worried that a particular photo has been edited and is trying to find out, my advice is to treat it as unverified and don’t share it. It’s easy for intimate or personal images to ruin someone’s reputation and cause harm to their life. To try to figure out if an image has been edited, look for things like weird artifacts, inconsistent lighting and poorly blended facial areas – most edit jobs have these kinds of tell-tale signs. However, the best way to verify an image online is to use technical checks but even these can be bypassed as many online platforms strip metadata from images. My approach is therefore to try to be the most moral version of myself online and report suspicious content to the site where it was hosted. Someone with more time and expertise can then verify the images and do what is necessary.

That sounds suspiciously like the kind of questions people want to have answered with a simple “yes” or “no” instead of an honest “I don’t know”. I have looked into many image controversies in the past, and in every case it was good to treat any “private” images first suspiciously until they had been verified to be real. There are several indicators of manipulated images: inappropriate lighting, incoherent or even blurred/faded/missing body parts, incoherent/unnatural edges, unnatural/overly smooth skin, lack of detail when zooming in, tiled repetitions when looking at the image in very high resolution, and other sign of heavy editing or even upscaling with AI. Note that none of these indicators is conclusive on its own.

When assessing claims online I look at provenance, i.e. where it came from, when was it first uploaded, who uploaded it and if there is an original file with metadata. Reverse image search can identify if an image has been reused online in different contexts. However, the EXIF metadata which may aid verification in some cases is often removed by social media sites before images are uploaded online. I avoid giving advice on how to spoil images, but in my experience it’s not hard these days to find fairly convincing images using deepfakes etc. The best ‘fakes’ contain the smallest details which are 99% true and therefore very believable. The only way to have images properly verified is through technical analysis combined with corroborating human testimony. Ideally this would involve verification from independent parties and sight of the source materials and/or written statements from the parties involved. If that’s not possible, then I wouldn’t declare the images to be authentic.

I try to approach each situation with a sense of ethics as well as investigation. My instinct is to protect the private images of private individuals. I would be unwilling to spread alleged images of private individuals in order to gossip or to accuse people of faking content about them. However, if someone believes that online content about them is fake, I would recommend that they document the online content that they believe to be fake, report it to the relevant online platform, and seek legal advice as necessary. My approach would be one of skeptical caution combined with respect for individuals’ privacy.

Most of these incidents start with a single individual within the victim’s personal or professional circle, who uses the information for revenge – character assassination – of the victim. The attack may include real but essentially innocuous pictures or videos mixed with completely false ones to create a certain storyline or narrative. It is a classical case of a smear campaign as opposed to a data leak. Understanding the single underlying motivation for this type of attack greatly changes one’s perspective on the whole scenario – it is personal and it is malicious.
