Athena Sandoval, an orphan who only has her aunt as her remaining family, became pregnant at the young age of eighteen by a man named Zachariah Elliott Montero. She was working as a waitress in a bar when she met the young man. Due to his extreme drunkenness, Zachariah only realized what had happened between them when he saw the girl—whom he had secretly admired for a long time—lying beside him the next morning. That night resulted in the birth of a little angel who would change Athena's life forever. Years later, their paths crossed once again. But Athena had no idea that the father of her child had become one of the wealthiest men in the world. Will she tell him about their child, or will she choose to keep it a secret? And when the truth is revealed, will she be able to forgive Zachariah once she finds out about the good things he has done for her?
View MoreI didn’t feel like getting up—I was too lazy to go to school. It was already seven in the morning, and I hadn’t even started getting ready. I don’t know, I just felt so unmotivated today.
I’m only in second year high school, but here I am, already being lazy. It’s not that I hate studying—my quiz and exam scores are always high, and I consistently do well in recitations and projects too. But sometimes, laziness just gets the better of me.
"Ugh, so tiring," I muttered to myself, finally deciding to get out of bed. I grabbed my towel and headed to the bathroom to take a shower.
I let out a deep sigh, in the end, I’m still going to school anyway.
"Dear, Athena."
That was Aunt Rosa’s voice, my mom’s sister who raised me ever since my mom passed away.
I was about to take a shower, but that didn’t happen. I was holding a bucket of water when I heard her enter my room. What could she possibly need?
"Yes, Auntie? I’m in the bathroom. Is there something you need?" I called out from inside. I even heard her laugh at what I said.
"Someone sent flowers and chocolates for you," she said, which completely shocked me.
Flowers? Chocolates? Who could they be from? I don’t have any suitors, and definitely no boyfriend."Do you have a boyfriend now? Oh my, Athena, your mom would rise from her grave if she found out you have a boyfriend," Auntie continued, joking around. She really knows how to tease, what if what she said actually came true? I hope not, and besides, that's not even on my mind right now.
"Auntie, I don’t have a boyfriend, you know I’m all about studying first, right? Besides, are you sure my name is on them?" I asked, lowering the bucket I was holding.
"Yes, it says Athena Sandoval. You might’ve forgotten your own name," she replied, making me laugh. "Even though my eyes aren’t what they used to be, I can still read small letters. I didn’t make a mistake reading that,” she continued.
"Alright, thank you, Auntie. Are you leaving?" I asked, giving in since what she said was true.
"Yes, I’m heading to work now. You can check downstairs after you’re done. And make sure you eat before you leave. I’m going now, take care, okay?"
"Yes, you too, Auntie." And I heard the door close. Suddenly, I couldn’t help but wonder, who would be interested in sending me flowers and chocolates? Could it be another prank from someone?
Out of curiosity, I finished my shower in less than ten minutes. Normally, it takes me around 20-30 minutes to shower, but today I was quick—probably because of the flowers and chocolates from someone I didn’t even know.
After I got dressed, I quickly went downstairs and headed to the living room. And there, I saw a bouquet of tulips and two boxes of chocolates.
Oh my God, how does he know that tulips are my favorite flowers?
"To: Athena Sandoval, From: Mr. Z. These flowers symbolize your sweetest and brightest smile the first time I saw you. I hope you like it, my Athena."
I was stunned after reading the small note. I don’t know why, but my heart was pounding in a way I’ve never felt before. And I’ve never felt this way in my whole life.
Mr. Z? Who is this? Do I even know him?
I walked into school in a daze. This was the effect on me after reading that note. It wouldn’t leave my mind no matter what I did.
"Happy Valentine's Day, Miss Rhea."
"Happy Valentine's Day, Zandra." "Happy Valentine's Day, everyone."Those were the kinds of phrases I heard around me. To be honest, they were kind of painful to hear, but I just ignored them and continued walking.
It was Valentine’s Day, after all—everyone seemed to be in love, but there were some like me who were bitter and without a partner. But no matter what, we all kept going with our lives.
"Hey! Athena Sandoval."
I stopped walking and turned toward the direction of the voice. It was my friend’s voice. This crazy girl actually said my full name.
Vanessa Agustin, my friend since childhood up to now.
"Are you okay? I’ve been calling you for a while, but you weren’t even listening," she said, her voice mixed with a bit of irritation. I shook my head in response and sighed, which made her even more confused.
"Do I know a guy whose name starts with the letter Z?" I asked. She didn’t answer right away, but she seemed to think about it.
"As far as I know, no. Why do you ask? Did someone send you a letter or, I don’t know, a death threat?" she replied, but I immediately hit her on the shoulder for saying that. This girl is crazy! I really don’t know why I’m still friends with her.
I ignored her and continued walking again.
"Hey, I’m just joking! You’re so serious," she said as she caught up with me, slinging her arm around my shoulder. "What’s going on? Why did you ask about that?" she asked curiously.
"Someone sent me flowers and chocolates earlier from a guy I don’t even know," I replied, causing her to stop in her tracks."Who sent them?" she asked, surprised.
"I don’t know either, it just says Mr. Z on the note," I answered.
"Are you sure the flowers and chocolates were really for you?"
"Is there another Athena Sandoval around our place? Isn’t it just me?"
"You’re right, I guess," she agreed. Ugh, this girl is really crazy. "But who could it be? I mean, there are guys who introduce themselves to you, but as far as I can remember, I haven’t met anyone whose name starts with Z. Could it be a schoolmate, or someone from another school?" she added.
"That seems unlikely to happen, but whatever, I’ll meet him eventually," I replied as we headed to our classroom.
When we entered, everyone was busy, each doing their part for the event later, while others were swooning over the flowers and chocolates they received. I just shook my head and walked over to my table.
"Oh? Who’s this from?"
Oh my gosh, another bouquet.
Mrs. Montero introduced me to her family, and they also introduced themselves to me. They seem nice, but I’m not sure if they really accept me into their family. But it’s okay if they don’t—as long as they accept my child. We’re currently having lunch. I’m sitting between Aaron and Zach, and I’m just quietly listening to their conversation. Honestly, I feel like going home because I feel out of place in this family. I don’t feel their wholehearted acceptance of me.“Athena, right?” asked Sydney, one of Zach’s female cousins. She’s the same age as me, but it’s unlikely that we’ll become close. She’s pretty but seems snobbish. She was the only one who ignored me earlier.“Umm, yes…” I replied shyly.“When did you and Ellie become a thing? Because I thought he had a relationship with Lauren,” she said, which made me fall silent. I quickly looked at Zach, but his face was now serious. How am I supposed to answer her question when, in the first place, we were never even together?“And you’
“I don’t know how long I’ll be staying here in his penthouse,” I said while looking at the pool. I’m on the phone with Vanessa right now, and I’m outside where I can see the tall buildings and the wide ocean.[Why? Is there a problem?]She clearly sounded worried about my situation, and I could feel it in her voice.“No, not really. It’s just… I don’t see myself living here, especially since we’re not even married. I only agreed to this kind of set-up because of Aaron.”[It sounds like you’re regretting your decision?]I couldn’t answer right away, because it’s true. It’s like I suddenly started regretting it the moment we came here. I just can’t seem to accept everything that’s happening right now. First of all, agreeing to live with him; second, living here in his penthouse, not knowing how to adjust to a life I’m not used to; and third, what Zach said earlier—that we’ll be living together forever. Just that alone, my mind can’t even process it.[Stop saying things like "just becaus
What time is it? Why does it feel like I can already hear the sound of the alarm clock?I stretched first before groping for my cellphone under the pillow. And my right eye was still closed when I finally turned it on.“5:30 am… great.” I woke up even before my alarm clock. So I got up to start preparing breakfast. But then I suddenly realized—we’re not at home.My goodness, how did I suddenly forget?I turned to look at Aaron, who was still sound asleep, hugging a pillow. I decided to get up and start cooking our breakfast. It would be embarrassing if his dad ended up cooking for us instead.“Oh, this wasn’t here last night,” I said when I saw a white fitted dress, a Chanel bag, and a black blazer. Aside from that, there were also black high heels and a hygiene kit.I wonder if he prepared this? But we don’t even have work today."Have you been up for a while?" I asked as I stepped out of the room. I found him in the kitchen, and he only paused what he was doing to glance back at me.
“Don’t forget Mommy’s reminders, okay?” I reminded him as we were leaving the house. I was also carrying a small suitcase with clothes enough for two days and other things he would need there.“Yes, Mommy, I won’t forget,” he answered, smiling at me.I decided to let him stay for two days at his grandmother’s house. This was the only solution I could think of so I wouldn’t have to live under his father’s roof. I didn’t want to cause any issues over that, especially since there’s no relationship between us. Sir Zach agreed to my request that Aaron stay with them on Sundays and just come back here when he has work the next day.I didn’t want to complicate things between us, so even if it’s hard to be away from my child, I will endure it for the peace of our lives as mother and son. When we reached outside the house, his father was already waiting for him. He immediately approached us when he saw the two of us.“Good evening,” he greeted us with a smile and immediately hugged his son.I
I can't concentrate on what I'm doing because of Sir Zach's suggestion. I haven’t agreed to what he said yet because I’m having second thoughts. Why do we even have to live in his house? It’s not like we’re in a relationship. And I’m also trying to avoid being talked about, especially since Sir Zach is a well-known personality. It’s unlikely that people who know and support him won’t find out. Especially now that no one knows yet that he has a child.“Van, what should I do?” I asked my friend, who I’m currently talking to on the phone.[Whatever is best for you and Aaron. Athena, there’s nothing wrong if you try it. Besides, you don’t even like each other, so it won’t be awkward if you live under the same roof.]It seems like she agrees with Sir Zach’s suggestion, but I’m still not convinced by what she said. It’s unlikely that it won’t be awkward, especially since something happened— No, I shouldn’t be thinking about that. Anyway, I still don’t want to.“What if everyone finds out ab
“Aaron? Why—”He didn’t get to finish what he was saying when his son suddenly hugged him. I could only shake my head while holding my forehead. But then my gaze shifted to Mrs. Montero, who was now looking in the direction of the father and son, and I was puzzled by her reaction because she wasn’t surprised, instead, she was smiling. What does that smile mean?“W-Why are you here?” he asked his son in confusion, but he only smiled at him.He looked at me, but I only responded with a small smile. I then gestured in the direction of his mother, and it seemed like he understood what I was trying to say. So he suddenly stood up and took Aaron by the hand to lead him toward Mrs. Montero, whose smile now stretched wide, and I couldn’t understand why.“Sorry for the disturbance, I just thought—”"It's okay, Athena, no need to apologize. His father is also waiting for him," Mrs. Montero cut me off with a smile. I was surprised by what she said, but confusion quickly overtook my expression.S
