Most recommendations I see lean hard into contemporary or fantasy, but some of the most excruciatingly slow burns I've loved are in historicals. Sherry Thomas's 'Lady Sherlock' series is a masterclass. Charlotte Holmes and Lord Ingram have this devastating, years-long history. Every interaction is layered with past hurt, societal duty, and the current murder case they're solving. The mystery plot is genuinely clever, but I'm there for the micro-expressions, the half-finished sentences, the way he pours her a glass of brandy without being asked.
It's agonizing in the best way because the obstacles feel historically plausible and deeply personal, not just manufactured conflict. You watch two brilliantly broken people navigate danger and deduction, and the slow rebuild of trust is more compelling than any first kiss could be.
Honestly, a lot of 'romantic suspense' moves way too fast for my taste. The couple is fleeing a killer and still finds time for insta-lust? It breaks my immersion. I prefer when the external threat actually slows the romance down. Simone St. James's 'The Sun Down Motel' does this well. The protagonist is consumed by solving her aunt's cold case in a haunted motel. The potential romantic interest is there, a connection forms, but it's utterly secondary to the eerie, pervasive mystery. The ghost story and the investigation create such a thick atmosphere that the romance becomes a small, warm light in the distance—you see it, you want to reach it, but the path is dark and full of unseen steps. The delay makes the eventual possibility of it feel like a reward for surviving the journey.
My definition of slow-burn got absolutely warped after reading T. Kingfisher's 'The Hollow Places' and 'The Twisted Ones'. Those books sit at the weird intersection of horror and a creeping, bizarre sort of attraction. The romance isn't the point, it's this tiny, persistent thread you cling to while the mystery of the setting threatens to unravel reality itself. It's less about will-they-won't-they and more about can-we-even-survive-this-long-enough-to-figure-it-out.
The tension comes from the environment pressing in, forcing a reliance between characters that builds something real and fragile. It's a very different flavor from a traditional mystery romance, but the payoff for the emotional connection feels earned in a way some faster-paced books don't manage. The mystery—what is this place, what are the rules—is the engine, and the romance is the quiet passenger, which somehow makes every glance or shared fear weightier.

"What are you doing?" She asked breathlessly as she placed her hands on the hard surface of his chest.
"I don't want you to run this time." He responded. She could feel the deep rumble of his voice through his chest as she slid her hands down an inch over his pectoral muscles. It was an involuntary move but as she felt his chest flex beneath her touch, she couldn't help but feel proud that she caused a reaction in him.
His breath fanned over her lips and subconsciously her tongue darted out to wet them. "You don't want me to run?" Juliet asked as she regained her footing, and he slid his hands up to her rib cage slowly.
"No." His voice was hard and firm. "No running."
"No running from what?" She knew what he was saying but she wanted him to do something about it. It was a burning need racing through her body. Her eyes closed as the tip of his nose brushed against hers.
"Me." At that moment her world stopped, and she refused to wait a second longer. She eagerly pressed forward to grab his lips with her own. They were soft and warm, but she only had a moment to dwell on that fact before he kissed her back with a heavy passion. One of his hands left her side to weave its way into her hair, pulling her impossibly closer.
