Okay, hot take: a lot of detective romances have 'strong' female leads who are just rude or emotionally closed off. Real strength in a partnership is vulnerability. That's why I adore 'The Hating Game' but in a crime setting? Hmm.
Maybe try 'Mr. Perfect' by Linda Howard. The heroine isn't a detective, but she's pulled into a murder investigation and her strength is her chaotic, relatable normalcy next to the stoic male lead. It's older, but the chemistry is fire.
For a recent indie standout, 'Butcher & Blackbird' by Brynne Weaver has that dark, rival serial killers vibe. It's more horror-comedy romance, but both leads are terrifyingly competent in their field. The detective work is... unorthodox. Strength here is portrayed as mastery of a morbid craft and finding someone who gets you. Wildly specific, but if it hits, it hits.
Picking a best depends on what kind of detective work you want. If you like a procedural feel with a really solid mystery plot and a slow burn, I'm always going to recommend the 'In Death' series by J.D. Robb. Eve Dallas is a classic tough cop with a traumatic past, but her growth and her relationship with Roarke is the long-term backbone. The romance is established early, but watching their partnership evolve over like 50+ books is its own reward.
For a more character-driven, contemporary take, I loved 'The Witness' by Nora Roberts. The heroine is a brilliant, socially isolated witness, and the local sheriff is just... decent. It's not about high-stakes action; it's about building trust and a life around someone who's been alone forever. The lead is strong because of her mind, not her physicality.
On the grittier, more suspenseful side, 'Mindfck' series by S.T. Abby is a wild ride. The detective is the male lead hunting a serial killer. The female lead... is the serial killer. Her strength is ruthless and vengeful, which is a very specific, darkly satisfying flavor. Definitely check content warnings, but if you want a morally grey, dominant female, it fits.
Everyone says 'In Death' and it's great, but honestly? I sometimes find Eve a bit too abrasive for a re-read. My personal favorite is something like Tana French's 'The Trespasser'. Not a traditional romance novel at all, but the dynamic between Antoinette Conway and her partner Steve has this incredible, tense, almost romantic subtext that's all about professional respect and deep loyalty. It's a different kind of strength—emotional endurance and integrity under pressure.
For a pure romance genre pick with a lighter touch, the 'Veronica Speedwell' series by Deanna Raybourn is delightful. Victorian lady lepidopterist and a grumpy natural historian keep stumbling into murders. Veronica is witty, fiercely independent, and the banter is top-tier. Their partnership feels genuinely equal, which is the core of a strong lead duo for me.
Sometimes the detective doesn't have to be the law, either. Think of books where the lead is a journalist or a civilian consultant—their strength comes from dogged persistence rather than a badge.

I found out my husband of three years had cheated on me and his mistress is the one who told me—because he didn’t have the balls to do it himself.
I move out and get a new apartment, a job as a bartender, and try to move on with a broken heart. I wonder where it all went wrong, if I hadn’t been enough for him, if I’d been stupid for marrying him in the first place.
I’m at work one night when he walks inside—the most beautiful man I’ve ever seen. He sits at the bar and a forest fire burns between us. I was depressed the moment before he entered, but the second I look at his blue eyes, I forget the dumpster fire that my life has become. I invite him back to my place and it’s the most passionate night of my life. I expect to never see him again.
I just want him as an anti-depressant—but he wants me all to himself. I just got my heart ripped out of my chest so I want something easy and no-strings-attached, but he wants all the strings because he’s hooked.
I don’t get much of a say in the matter, and that’s not surprising when I learn why—because he’s the Butcher. The crime lord of all crime lords, the boss that overshadows all of Paris, that makes everyone abide by his rules—or pay.
And now I’m his.

The character dynamics in detective romance are shifting away from the classic 'hardboiled guy and plucky assistant' mold, and I'm all for it. A book that nailed this recently was 'The Honeymoon' by Rona Halsall. The protagonist, a financial investigator, is methodical and sharp, but her personal life gets entangled with the case in a way that feels terrifyingly plausible. The romantic tension comes from her growing suspicion towards her new husband, not from a charming colleague. It’s less about will-they-won’t-they and more about can-she-trust-him, which is a far more gripping foundation for a romance.
I also have a soft spot for historical series where the woman has to operate within rigid social constraints. Deanna Raybourn's Veronica Speedwell books are fantastic for this; she's a lepidopterist with a razor-sharp wit and a complete disregard for Victorian propriety, which creates hilarious friction with her more staid detective partner. Their romance is a gloriously slow burn built on mutual respect for each other's intellect, not just physical attraction. That intellectual parity is what makes the female lead feel genuinely strong—she's not just tough, she's his equal in every meaningful way.
