There are plenty of free books for romance readers on apps like WebNovel, Wattpad and Kindle by Amazon. The free books often have premium chapters that you can pay for but many of them are complete stories in themselves. I read a free book called ‘Hot Desire (A Collection of Steamy Stories)’ recently. This book is a collection of individual short stories, each of which are very short and focus on a single, short, intense romance. Each story is set in a different location and scenario, so although they are all very short and ‘Steamy’ there is plenty of variety to stop them becoming boring.

This app is SO much fun. I read lots of romance novels so I tested out loads of free apps. This one is by far the best for me. Wattpad is essentially a big library of Indy novels – most of the stories are by amateur authors. There are some absolutely fantastic stories available – ‘The Bad Boy’s Girl’ was another recent read of mine. You can also join communities and write your own novels and share them with other members and get feedback from your fellow readers and get recommendations from friends.
If you want to read more polished romance novels for free then 'Libby' is for you. Pair it with a library card and you can download bestsellers like 'The Hating Game' (although wait lists can be a long time so be patient).
Radish is another great option for serialized storytelling, that’s particularly great for reading on the go, during your daily commute for example. It’s been recommended to me based on my reading habits, and within the first few chapters of the first story, ‘The Royals of Forsyth University’, I was hooked.

Romance novels are my escape from reality and reading them on free apps makes me feel less guilty for binge reading all night. I love Wattpad because there is so much diversity in the novels. I have read many angsty novels with LGBTQ+ main characters as well as some really quirky meet-cutes. The comment section is also fun because you can discuss plot twists with other readers like you would in a book club.

To me, translation quality is a huge differentiator that gets lost in the comparison of the various apps. While official translations from VIZ, Kodansha, etc. are done professionally in localized dialogue, fan translations on aggregator sites can range from excellent to terrible. Some are even translated via machine to be near incomprehensible gibberers. If you really want to read and appreciate the story and dialogue in a manga, it is worth paying for the official apps to get the best translation and typesetting (which is almost always cleaner and more consistent).
It’s also very important to consider the quality of translation when deciding between apps. I’ve stopped reading a series on an aggregator site of manga translations because of poor translation. However, reading the same series through an official app was wonderful, because the translation was professional and even the dialogue was localized to read better. Typesetting was also better distributed and more consistent. When you’re offline for a long time and can’t look up a fanmade summary within seconds to figure out what happened, you want to make sure you have a good translation to begin with. Sometimes paying a little more for an app is worth it because you’re paying for quality content, as the author intended it to be read.

If you want something different again then Tapas (which is read chapter by chapter rather like a comic and can be read online for free in bite sized chunks) has a number of romantic comics and stories. Also Amazon Kindle free section has, for me, been a source of some very good self-published romances (yes really!).
