What Apps To Read Dark Romance Books For Free Offer Unlimited Access?

I’ve tested countless apps for free access. Here’s my honest take.

'Wattpad' seems like the most obvious choice for accessing a huge library of dark romance novels, although there is lots of premium content. As previously mentioned, lots of free dark romance novels can be found by searching for tags such as ‘dark love’ or ‘obsessive romance’. Another novel site that has been tested for free access is 'Webnovel' - the site allows free access to novel chapters, although it is limited unless you unlock daily rewards.

Combining Moon+ Reader with free EPUBs that can be found on sites such as Z-Library (when available) for offline reading makes for a great read experience. Also, the free trial for Scribd’s service is very valuable as it allows you to read unlimited dark romance books for a month and then cancel the service before it auto-renews.

If you’re a fan of the fanfic world, Archive of Our Own (AO3) is a veritable treasure trove of dark romance novels, especially when you filter by tags like ‘dark AU’ or ‘toxic relationships’. Another quaint community of writers and readers is on Quotev, however, the platform’s interface is terribly outdated. Two platforms to look into for borrowing library novels, such as dark romance, for free are Hoopla and Libby. Just remember that your library likely has a rather limited selection of titles to chose from.

Lastly, I was searching for something a bit more normal, so I looked into checking out some of the dark romance books for free from my local library using 'Libby'. There is plenty of dark romance on Gutenberg too (specifically ‘Wuthering Heights’ which I downloaded to read on my 'Google Play Books' app and also on my 'Kindle').

The AO3 is another app that is really, really great for fanfiction, and has an excellent tagging system so you can pick out things with specific dark themes (though note that everything on the site is free, so be aware that the quality can vary). Quotev also has a large and active community of original and fan writers, many of them writing in the dark romance genre. Note that this site does have ads, and sometimes the site can be a little clunky to navigate.

After hours of research and browsing through various apps and sites, here are a few that offer endless reading of dark, romantic tales. The app that I consider most suited to readers of dark romance is Wattpad – an enormous collection of user-generated stories that cater to many genres including many dark themes. Of course, there are some stories that have been posted which are locked behind ‘coins’ which can be purchased, but the vast majority of stories are completely free to read. Webnovel also has a large collection of stories but be aware that while most are free to read, daily chapter limits apply unless you’re willing to watch ads. The Moon+ Reader app itself isn’t a library but rather an app which allows you to read your free EPUBs – check out sites like Project Gutenberg or Z-Library (when it’s working) for a plethora of free books. For those who’d rather not trawl through the vast selection of stories available on free apps and would prefer to access a curated collection of dark romance tales for free, a free trial for Scribd’s unlimited access to all books on their service, including many dark romance titles, is worth considering. Just be aware that after your trial has ended, the app becomes cost per month to use. Lastly, fans of fiction should also note that Archive of Our Own (AO3) – a user-generated, entirely free, and taggable library of mostly fandom-based fiction – includes an enormous amount of dark romance, which can be searched by tag (e.g. angst, morally gray characters, etc.). Just be prepared to sift through some hundreds of entries to find the truly great stories hidden within.
