I found some awesome free reads online for teens and young adults. The awesome site Wattpad has a ton of hidden gems. I personally really love ‘The Bad Boy’s Girl’ by Blair Holden. It’s a classic enemies-to-lovers story with a lot of drama. Another great read is ‘The Cellar’ by Natasha Preston, it’s a super thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat for a long time. ‘The Iron Trial’ by Cassandra Clare and Holly Black is a great start to the ‘Magisterium’ series, available for free on Open Library.

Dystopian? You can download for free “Legends of Orkney” by Alane Adams on Kindle Unlimited (you can even try it for free for a month). Contemporary novel? “Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda” by Becky Albertalli is often downloadable for free through library apps like OverDrive. And, of course, there are thousands of classics to download for free from Project Gutenberg including “Little Women” and “Anne of Green Gables”. As with so many things, this list has something for everyone.

So. I love free YA books. 'BookBub’s free deals' – lots of samples for books like Throne of Glass. Also there’s loads of Fanfiction on Fanfiction.net (right now I’m in the middle of reading Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. 1500 pages and going). Inkshares have free chapters for original books – I’ve looked at The Disasters. Open Library let me digitally ‘borrow’ and download Percy Jacksons. (No waitlist, which is great). And on Reddit, there’s a daily post of free e-books on r/FreeEBOOKS. They have loads of fantasy and contemporary books.

I spend way too much time finding out about free YA books. I managed to make a list of some for you. Audiobooks of public domain books are offered through LibriVox, so you can listen for free to Sherlock Holmes. Many best-selling young adult novels are included in Kindle’s free section for a limited time, including The Hunger Games and Divergent. Webnovels, such as the brilliant Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint found on Webnovel.com, have become a new favorite of mine. Much of the poetry available is free to read on platforms like Scribd, including popular titles such as Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur. Graphic novels like Tapas offer free comics, such as the beloved Heartstopper. There are hundreds of genres and books available for free, including romance and post-apocalyptic novels, so you’re sure to find something you like.

Free books for young adults. To read freely you want to access a wide variety of current and classic books. For classic literature I would recommend Project Gutenberg where you can find ‘Pride and Prejudice’ and many more. A trial to Scribd.com offers instant access to a huge collection of current YA titles like ‘The Cruel Prince’ and many more. Wattpad is also worth a look as readers can read the global phenomenon of ‘After’ for free. Much current literature can be accessed through Google Books, often with free samples and even full works by authors like Lois Lowry who wrote the award-winning ‘The Giver’. If you have very little time to read, Tor.com features a wide selection of free short stories, including several excellent pieces by N.K. Jemisin. They may be free but they are not lesser – they are just as good as anything you’d pay for!

I’m looking for free reads that are just as good as paid-for books. Recently I’ve been reading a lot of young adult books. Fanfiction is also great and AO3 (Archive of Our Own) has an incredible amount of high quality stories – I highly recommend ‘Heat Waves’ for a modern take on romance. As for original stories, Royal Road is a great place to find free and entertaining fiction, such as ‘Mother of Learning’, a very addictive time-loop fantasy story. ‘The Selection’ by Kiera Cass is also often free on Kindle deals and is a great mix of romance and competition to see who will be chosen to be the prince’s wife. I have also recently joined Libby and recommend ‘Cinder’ by Marissa Meyer as a great sci-fi fairy tale retelling. Creepypasta also has a lot of free horror stories online, perfect for reading late at night and getting yourself in the mood for some spooky tales. These are all great examples of how you don’t have to spend any money to read some fantastic stories.

Best sites to read free books online without downloading for adults?

The Poetry Foundation is an absolute dream for poetry enthusiasts, with a huge online archive of poems to read, search by poet, subject or even mood. Beautifully designed, the site encourages plenty of browsing and is likely to reveal many unexpected treasures. You can easily move from classic sonnets by established poets to brand new award-winning poems by contemporary writers, plus there’s scope for audio and critical essays as well as the poems themselves. A really deep, rich and entirely free resource, held solely for the love of poetry. I find it a calm, peaceful ‘reading space’ of a rather different sort to my normal reading habitat.

What are the best free online books without downloading platforms?

For my own part, I’ll stick to following copyright on modern bestsellers, and avoid free e-books offered on rogue websites with pop-up ads and the potential for malware. Sites that offer free e-books, such as modern bestsellers, may be offered through library websites, Project Gutenberg, publisher giveaways, and an author’s own website. While these sites may require a bit of extra searching, and possibly a library card, there is much to be said for experiencing e-books through legitimate channels – it’s a much safer reading experience and actually supports the reading ecosystem. Illegal sites have dreadful formatting and sometimes even lack key chapters, leading to a really frustrating reading experience. Why not take the time to search out a free and legal e-book instead, and have a nice reading stroll in the park, rather than taking a risk and going down a dark alley?

Where can I read adult book novels for free online?

The academia lit lover may find academic and literary novels released as open access by the publisher, including works supported by public funds. These are often released as PDFs directly off a publisher or author’s website. Unlike typical fiction released as open access, these titles are not promoted in the same way and thus are hidden from the general public. Yet, dense, award-winning literary fiction of the highest academic status is released for free. Unlike the numerous free titles on Amazon, these are released slowly and of high prestige.

For free Asian web novels, translation quality reads a million times better than garbage. High-quality translations of original works of fiction (even “free” ones like those found on Wuxiaworld or Volare, for instance) far outstrip heaps of locally-hosted “aggregated” copy—all “translated” via some half-baked program of semi-automated re-pulsing via interpolation of works from paying translation groups. Take the time to click on to the original translators and their providers—huge differences between extremely readable original translated chapters and mangled stuff “summarized” for your reading “convenience” by web novel “aggregators”.

Where to read free romance adults books online legally?

Within the romance novels field I currently specialize in translated novels originally published in other languages (Korean webnovels, Japanese light novels, Chinese danmei novels). Getting hold of a free legal copy of such a novel is not as easy as it is with English language novels. Most webnovels are serialized, and even completed ones are rarely translated and made available for free, especially when they are official translations. (Exceptions are made when there is an anime adaptation for example.) Once more, your best bet for accessing free translated romance would be your local library, as some systems have started adding titles from platforms such as OverDrive’s Global Chinese collection, or even partner with comic and app services that offer translated webnovels. Demand for translated novels is up in recent years, but as of now there is still not as much access as there is to English-language romance novels. Free samples of novels from official aggregator sites for translated novels are typically how you can look at free samples of a specific sub-genre before you buy it.

There are lots of free websites where you can read books online without signing up to a website first. For classic books that are no longer copyrighted there’s the wonderful Project Gutenberg (long established) and ManyBooks (my current favorite with a great variety of free books of many different types in different formats too). For free audiobooks there’s Librivox, which features free public domain audiobooks for download, all of them read by volunteers. On the other hand, Open Library allows users to borrow digital books, many of which can be checked out by users without an account. Additionally, Classic Shorts offers short stories and essays that users can instantly read online for free without having to sign up for anything.

What are the best books with unrequited love for young adults?

'Chandler Legacies', Abdi Nazemian's novel about five students at a boarding school in the 1990s, focuses on Beth who is stuck in limbo not knowing how to express her hidden love for her roommate Sarah. But this unrequited love is fraught with much silence and fear of detection from the faculty and the rest of the student body. However, with secret after-school writing sessions led by Beth, she finds solace and support from her fellow struggling students, resulting in the novel portraying finding one’s voice not only creatively but also personally. The main love story is but one of many interlocking friendships, of other secret hopes and traumatic memories of all of the five main characters, but above all an exploration of silence, fear, secrets and hidden expressions of love, aching to be free in times when such love could not be openly uttered or acknowledged – it’s all such to carefully be hidden and thus, sometimes, to be deliberately and very carefully codified and expressed in subtle yet clear gestures of endearment.

What are the best sites for free books you can read offline?

Wikipedia can surprise you as a gateway. Researching a classic author or classic novel often in the sidebar or at the bottom of a Wikipedia article about them you can find a link to a free ebook version on websites such as Project Gutenberg or Internet Archive. These sources are not primary sources, but very useful to confirm whether a work is in the public domain or not and to get directly linked to the free online version. A while ago I randomly remembered a very obscure novel and wanted to read it from time to time. Using Wikipedia I found the free online version within minutes.

Who are the top publishers of young adult fiction books?

6 Answers2026-07-27
Of course, there are other massive children’s book publishers like Scholastic (so extensively entrenched in schools and book fairs that it’s sort of surreal). But in terms of prestige and literary distinction, I’d rank Penguin Random House (Knopf Books for Young Readers, G.P. Putnam’s Sons Books for Young Readers, etc.) above the rest. And then there’s HarperCollins Children’s Books, with its enormous backlist. But really, Macmillan and Simon & Schuster are the two other big players in the traditional publishing world. But again, this is corporate, publishing-bigwigs stuff. The actual YA publishing world is a bunch of passionate, idiosyncratic individual editors who happen to work for these various companies. The logos on the spines of the published books are pretty irrelevant.
