Looking at purely accessible production values (ie: good anime with decent plots and nice animation) then titles from the last 5-10 years would be best for a beginner. Before then there were titles, yes, but they’re rough by today’s standards. So maybe make a filter for ‘titles from the last 5 years’ and pick the most popular one to start with.

Many unique perspectives are expressed in films from around the world, excluded from the often narrow views expressed in the majority of Hollywood films. ‘Y Tu Mamá También’, a road trip film from Mexico, explores issues of class and politics through the eyes of two teenage boys and their older mother. Passionate, confusng and life altering sex is also explored in this authentic portrayal of life in a hot and dusty Mexico. Another highly unique film is the Korean ‘The Handmaiden’, a sumptuous and twisty thriller about a con-woman who falls for her mark in Japanese-occupied Korea. This is a clever and passionate queer love story. Looking at films from beyond the English language is vital.

I see people going to great lengths to get very specific content. The internet has made us all so specific in what we want to consume. I used to just watch whatever was on TV or whatever tape I managed to get my hands on. These days there’s all this content out there and people want to find this minute sub-sub-genre from this specific country with this specific status. It’s a first-world problem, but a problem nonetheless for people of this digital age. I’m not judging, I’m just observing how the infrastructure of the internet creates all these tiny niches and how one would be frustrated if XNXX were to try and serve all these people with one platform.

I like XNXX for being so straight forward, no constant pop ups like with most free websites and content loads properly. It doesn’t have any of the extra content that you get with a premium membership, such as exclusive videos or behind the scenes peeks, but if other sites are just to much to deal with then XNXX is a good alternative, it’s like fast food, not great but it hits the spot when you need it.

If you're looking for manga that balances steamy moments with compelling storytelling, 'Nana to Kaoru' is a fantastic pick. It explores BDSM dynamics through the lens of two childhood friends, blending genuine emotional depth with its erotic elements. The character development is surprisingly nuanced—Kaoru's growth from awkward teen to confident dominant feels organic, and Nana's journey of self-discovery hits harder than most drama series.
For something more fantastical, 'Velvet Kiss' delivers gorgeous art and a transactional relationship that evolves into something unexpectedly tender. The power dynamics shift in fascinating ways, and the financial domination premise adds unique tension. Both series prove erotic manga can offer substance beyond titillation, with art styles that enhance rather than distract from the narratives.

Ecchi is one of those terms that gets tossed around a lot in anime and manga circles, but it’s not always clear what it really means. Basically, it refers to content that’s sexually suggestive but doesn’t cross into explicit territory. Think playful innuendos, skimpy outfits, or scenes with a lot of teasing tension—like the classic 'accidental pervert' trope where a character stumbles into an embarrassing situation. It’s often used for comedy or lighthearted fanservice, and it’s pretty common in shounen and harem genres. Shows like 'To Love-Ru' or 'High School DxD' are great examples—they push boundaries but stop short of being outright hentai.
That said, ecchi can sometimes blur the line depending on the series. Some titles lean harder into the suggestive elements, while others keep it relatively tame. It’s interesting how different cultures interpret it too; what might be considered mild in Japan could raise eyebrows elsewhere. Personally, I enjoy ecchi when it’s done with a sense of humor or adds to the character dynamics, but it can feel gratuitous if it’s just thrown in for shock value.

Ignoring star ratings on popular platforms and reading one-star reviews is basically a side job I do to find good character-driven stories among the deluge of recent publications. Often the only indicator for me that a highly hyped novel is actually character-driven are the same complaints that every other novel receives: ‘too much talking’, ‘not enough action’, ‘boring buildup’.
It was a novel by a relatively unknown author. According to the reviews on bigger sites, it was actually really bad. People would say that instead of having the demon lord conquer the world, he'd be cursed to feel the pain and suffering of every living thing. He meets a human knight who is emotionally numb because of trauma from his past. Together, they have a romance. The plot of the novel is the development of their relationship, and their relationship is that he tries to help her feel emotions and she helps him to develop emotional barriers that would allow him to function. The physical intimacy between the two is a deep form of communication for her, but extremely intense and even terrifying for him. The author handles it surprisingly sensitively.

I picked ‘Wave, Listen to Me!’, a workplace drama with supernatural elements, as it is a hidden gem. A loud and boorish waitress accidentally gets hired for a late-night radio show after a night of heavy drinking and actually turns out to be great at it. The show looks at the crazy mayhem of working in live radio and the burnout of creating something new while also exploring career change in your late 20s. The protagonist, Minare, is an amazing, adult, woman – flawed, fierce and passionate. It’s really sharp, funny and has loads of heart.

It’s worth noting that within the cultivation genre, there are many sub-genres and that ‘most popular’ cultivation novels can be categorized within specific sub-genres. I Shall Seal the Heavens is a pure xianxia novel with a very complex power structure, and is thus highly revered by those who only read hardcore cultivation novels. Cultivation Chat Group, which is a comedy-based cultivation novel, has the largest reader base within the cultivation genre, and that is because it is so unique and different from other cultivation novels. It depicts modern cultivators using smartphones and group chat to further their goals. Master of Gu (also known as Reverend Insanity) is also very popular and is often classified as a revenge-focused dark cultivation novel. It has a strong cult following due in part to the very controversial and often despicable protagonist of the novel. There’s a king for every corner of the cultivation genre.

Honestly, most Indian-themed erotica I've clicked on in online spaces tries to blend the old and new. It's a weird tightrope to walk. There's this constant push-pull between a character's upbringing—maybe strict, traditional expectations around marriage—and their own secret, modern desires. The stories that work for me aren't just about forbidden sex in a sari; it's the emotional whiplash that gets me. Like a character feeling intense guilt after a liberating experience because those cultural echoes don't just vanish.
I stumbled on a web serial a while back, forget the title, where a woman in an arranged marriage starts a discreet online relationship. The tension wasn't just will-they-get-caught, but her own internal war between her duty to her family's honor and this newfound sense of self. The spicy parts were hot, sure, but what kept me reading was that messy emotional core. A lot of lesser stories just use tradition as a cardboard backdrop for smut, which feels lazy and kinda disrespectful.
I'd say the portrayal is uneven. Some writers nail the complexity, others just lean on clichés like the corrupt priest or the rebellious college student. The best ones make you feel the weight of tradition in the characters' choices, not just in the descriptions of their clothes or food.
