The community itself often decides what becomes the 'definitive' collector's edition. Right now, the Alan Lee illustrated set is the darling. A decade ago, it was the 50th Anniversary set. In another decade, it'll be something else. If you're collecting as an investment, that's a tricky game. If you're collecting for personal joy, just get the one that makes your heart skip a beat when you see it on your shelf. Trends come and go, but your own genuine affection for the object is what will make it valuable to you in the long run.

I lean toward the editions that include the original maps as fold-out sheets, not just printed across a page spread. Being able to unfold a large, detailed map of Middle-earth while reading is an irreplaceable experience. Some editions bind them into the back, which is okay, but the ones that have them as separate, sturdy inserts in a pocket inside the cover are fantastic. It's a small touch, but it shows the publisher understood the functional, immersive role the maps play for the reader.

What is the best Lord of the Rings trilogy book?

The best book in 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy for me is definitely 'The Two Towers.' It's where the story really splits into these intense parallel narratives—Frodo and Sam’s harrowing journey toward Mordor with Gollum as their guide, and the epic defense of Helm’s Deep. The pacing is relentless, and the emotional stakes are sky-high. Tolkien’s world-building shines here, especially in the way he contrasts the bleakness of the Dead Marshes with the grandeur of Rohan’s halls. What seals it for me is the character development. Sam’s loyalty hits harder, Aragorn steps into his role as a leader, and even Gollum becomes more than just a creepy tagalong. The book feels like the perfect middle ground—dark enough to keep you on edge but still packed with moments of hope. Plus, who can forget that cliffhanger with Shelob? Pure nightmare fuel.

What is the best illustrated version of the Lord of the Rings books?

Having owned a few, I'd actually caution against going for the 'best' overall and instead think about what you want from the art. The older Hildebrandt brother illustrations from the 70s calendars have this vibrant, almost pulp-fantasy vibe that’s full of energy and color. It's a very different feel from the more recent, somber Alan Lee or John Howe editions. If you grew up with those calendar images, they are Middle-earth. So 'best' is super subjective. The newer ones are technically masterful, but the Hildebrandt art has a nostalgic magic that’s hard to replicate. It depends on whether you want your edition to feel classic or cinematic.

What Lord of the Rings book set is ideal for long-term collectors?

Think about the font and typesetting. Some older editions use dense, small fonts that are a chore to read. A long-term collection should include books you'll want to read repeatedly, so legibility is key. Modern editions often have more generous spacing and clearer fonts. The 2021 illustrated edition has beautiful, readable typography that complements the illustrations. Don't just judge a book by its cover; judge it by its page. Comfortable reading ensures the set gets used, not just admired.
