Most crossover pairings feel forced, but Hermione Granger with Sherlock Holmes is the glaring exception. It’s less about romance and more about two brilliant, abrasive minds colliding. I’ve read a few where she’s his Muggle-born research assistant in Victorian London, and the way they deconstruct magic as a series of logical problems is fantastic. The pairing works because it respects both characters' core arrogance without simplifying either.
You do have to sift through a lot of poorly plotted mysteries to find the good ones, though. The best fics treat the crossover as a character study, not just a plot vehicle. The tension comes from whether Hermione’s methodology or Sherlock’s will crack the case first, magical or not.

Draco Malfoy thrown into 'The Hunger Games'. Sounds cracky, but the few decent fics explore his pureblood superiority complex crumbling in a arena where bloodlines mean nothing and survival is everything. It’s a brutal, effective way to force character growth. The pairing isn’t romantic initially—it’s often with another tribute from that world, built on sheer necessity—which makes any eventual connection feel earned, not fandom-serving.

I find the Ron/Hermione dynamic weirdly compelling in crossovers because it shifts their roles so much. In 'Browncoat, Green Eyes' where Ron ends up in 'Firefly', he's suddenly the inexperienced one while she's this competent Alliance agent, and the push-pull of that keeps the tension alive. Their bickering takes on a whole new shade.
Pairings that stick within the Wizarding World but fold in another universe's logic often work better for me. Harry/Luna crossovers with 'Doctor Who', for instance, let Luna's oddness feel prophetic instead of just quirky. She’d probably understand a TARDIS better than anyone.
Honestly, I’ve drifted away from the big epic Harry-centric crossovers. The smaller character studies, like a Neville Longbottom story crossing with 'The Chronicles of Narnia', often handle the clash of worlds with more subtlety. The trauma of the Department of Mysteries meeting the quiet magic of Narnia could be something special, if done right.

Will they obey the rules... or cross the line?
They took everything from her. Her freedom, her pack, and her name.
Sofia Fletcher has survived four years of slavery, a mate who rejected her for her own stepsister, and the kind of cruelty that teaches you never to hope. She has one rule left: trust no one.
Then Draco walks into an auction house and takes her.
He doesn't bid. He doesn't ask. He simply crosses a room full of bowed heads because when the most powerful being alive enters, everyone drops their eyes, and he takes her home.
He is an Alpha King like no other. Werewolf. Vampire. Demon king. Dragon slayer. Immortal. And he has been searching for Sofia for years, because she is the one thing in his long, terrible life he cannot walk away from.
His fated mate.
Sofia wants nothing to do with him. She is an Omega the lowest rank in pack society with a dangerous secret buried in her blood, and a past that left scars no one is allowed to touch. Draco is patient, possessive, and impossible to ignore, and the mate bond humming beneath her skin is beginning to feel less like a curse and more like an answer.
But Sofia's secret is the kind that gets witches killed. And Draco's world is full of enemies including the brother who wants to destroy him, and the father who will use anyone to take back what he lost.
Falling for the Alpha King was never the plan but fate has it's own plan.
The Harry Potter fandom has spun some truly creative pairings over the years, and I’ve fallen down more than a few rabbit holes exploring them. One of my favorites is Draco/Hermione—it’s such a tension-filled dynamic, with the whole 'enemies to lovers' arc. Fics like 'Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love' nail the slow burn, where Draco’s sarcasm clashes hilariously with Hermione’s stubbornness. Then there’s the emotional depth of Remus/Sirius; the tragedy of their lost time together makes for heartbreakingly beautiful stories. 'All the Young Dudes' reimagines their youth with so much raw emotion that I ugly-cried more than once.
On the lighter side, Harry/Luna is a pairing I adore for its whimsy. Luna’s eccentricity balances Harry’s seriousness, and fics often explore how she sees the world in ways he never could. And let’s not forget the rare pairs—like Neville/Pansy, which can be surprisingly compelling when writers give Pansy depth beyond her snobbish facade. Honestly, the beauty of fanfiction is how it twists canon into something fresh, making you root for pairings you’d never expect.
