There’s so much love already for these super early dialogue excerpts but this one remains one of the most popular in modern popular fiction – loved or hated. The simple statement ‘I don’t make love. I fuck… hard.’ is arguably the most famous sentence in Fifty Shades of Grey for better or for worse. This sentence is the thesis statement to Christian’s persona in the early chapters of the book and it’s been quoted in countless reviews, parodies and think pieces. The sentences impact extends far beyond the pages of the book itself and has become a cultural reference point for the kind of erotic fiction that E.L. James writes. It’s either thrilling or ridiculous to readers but its impact cannot be denied. When discussing popular excerpts this remains one of the top picks.

Just to be clear: Fifty Shades was never on Wattpad. So the question is a little misleading.

Consider Patch a sort of Rorschach test for romance novel readers. That is, what they see in Patch can often reveal to the reader what it is that he or she wants in a relationship, or even what they are willing to settle for. Some see a protector, of course. Others see a very different man – a predator who seeks out young, inexperienced girls to groom and control. While the text does contain evidence to support both points of view, it’s been painful for me to see Patch portrayed as so very bad, and yet at times rewarded by the narrative for that very badness. This must be very good for marketing, as it has generated a ton of discussion.

If you like vampire-themed stories, Fifty Shades of Grey actually started as fanfiction for Twilight.

That would be hilarious to see him in a job interview. 'So, Mr. Grey, I see here you’re CEO of a Fortune 500 company. Can you tell me about a time you faced a challenge?' 'Well, I once had to track my girlfriend’s cell phone in order to locate her because she had gone to see her mother. I used my many resources and controlled demanding personality to get her to do as I wanted. I’m a very perfectionistic person.' He would probably get laughed out of the room or even sued.
This character only exists in the world of fiction, where the outcomes are dictated by the genre being written and therefore do not have to adhere to the labor laws or healthy relationship practices that exist in the real world. Therefore, he must be a fictional character. Any real person acting in this way would be isolated from friends and family, and would more than likely require some kind of intervention. This character is a heavily edited version of human being, with only the most dramatic aspects of his personality included.

Will it be considered as smut or as romance on Wattpad? There are readers who want closed-door/fade-to-black scenes and there are those who want extremely explicit detailed scenes. Most top-rated stories are in between – they are extremely steamy to satisfy the heat-seekers but not so graphic that others who like to read while feeling the tension instead of reading detailed scenes would be put off. In order to achieve this a writer would have to be extremely good at writing sensually charged scenes and then leave the rest to the reader’s imagination. Anticipation and emotions are more important than details. Meeshawrites is a great example of this kind of writer. She writes extremely sensually charged scenes but they are never graphic. Her scenes are just extremely sensual and therefore very satisfying for readers who are looking for good smut but are also not off-putting for those who prefer to read while feeling the tension instead of reading detailed scenes. The stories that have smut in them and are rated high are likely to have this kind of approach to writing scenes with smut in them. Staying too much in the explicit territory may exclude some readers due to their age or because of their personal preferences while not enough smut may have led readers to expect more smut than what was delivered by the writer under the smut tag.

Is this from Christian’s POV? I thought this was just some fanfiction, and now it’s official?!

I'll have to read the chapter again with a highlighter to get the best answer, but for now my memory can only recall a haze of men in ties and annoying pilot puns with sporadic, ambiguous references to them hitting on me.

The playroom – the equipment for a BDSM 101 mainstream novel. A cross, a bench, some paddles, floggers, cuffs, blindfolds. The cable ties, for the legal waiver joke. The anal beads and plug, stored in a velvet box. A ‘rack of canes’. The room itself is soundproofed, softly lit, with tiled floors which can be easily cleaned. It looks like a bunker or a surgery, and it is his domain. It is not a playfully exploratory space for mutual pleasure. Every item has a purpose and it is ruled by him in order to reach that purpose. The inventory looks like a starter kit for a very specific, contract-based BDSM relationship.

I'm always leery of stories that have really professional, stock-photo-style covers. Often such stories are trying too hard to look published and really may be all style and no substance. The best stories on this site have pretty simple, even amateurish-looking covers that were made with Canva. (The heart is in the writing, not in the marketing of the story.) A beautifully drawn original cover, on the other hand, often indicates that the author has invested a lot of time in the story, which is a good sign. You have to learn to read the visual language of covers. A generic-looking shirtless male cover? Probably a generic inside story. A clever, thematic, original cover? High chances of a thoughtful inside story.
