I have been exploring many of the books on Christian anxiety written by different authors. So far Timothy Keller does the best job of providing comfort and clarity in his thick theological book “Walking with God Through Pain and Suffering”. He shows how to tie anxiety to bigger questions about faith.

After that, I read Lysa TerKeurst’s ‘It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way’ which was incredibly powerful and helped me in so many ways. The book was written by a woman who has gone through very difficult times but the advice that she gave was such that it really hit home for me. A more daily approach to tackling anxiety is provided in ‘New Morning Mercies’ written by Paul David Tripp. Each day of the devotional is like being walked through the situation by someone who has a great grip on the work of the Lord in our lives.

Sarah Young’s ‘Jesus Calling’ is simple but powerful. It is as if God is speaking to you. While many books on anxiety have attempted to explain it, there are many resources to help fight it as well. These authors are among the many that are highly recommended.

I recommend books on faith and anxiety written by authors who are “real” and have struggled through similar tough times. My favorite is “Hope in the Dark” by Craig Groeschel, a short and very real book that leaves no space for useless words. Instead he gives the reader the same kind of motivation and encouragement that he would give in a session of coaching someone to trust God and His plan.

Sheila Walsh also tackles anxiety with faith in her book ‘Praying Women’. It is full of personal testimony and also shows us how to use Scripture in our prayers in a really powerful way. Alternatively, for a quieter and more reflective read, Ann Voskamp’s ‘One Thousand Gifts’ is stunning.

All of these authors are very different but they have all written books that embody practical faith. So whether you need to be encouraged or just needing to be reminded that you are not alone these books are like having a good friend on your book shelf.

There are many great authors, but some stand out more than others. For example, Max Lucado's work ‘Anxious for Nothing’ makes me feel like I’m being given a big hug whilst understanding how worry affects people and showing how scripture can be used to apply solutions to worry. Jennie Allen is also a great author as she relates well to her readers in her book ‘Get Out of Your Head’. The author Charles Stanley also makes me feel at ease and gives the reader insight into how to manage anxiety in his book ‘The Peaceful Heart’. These authors are not just preachers, but they also walk with their readers through their books.
