When reading new romance novels Christian Grey, the wealthy and dominant businessman in Fifty Shades of Grey, seems to make an appearance in every other novel. Recently I came across Please Me, Daddy: 50 Shades of Desire. On the surface it is another story with powerful, controlling male lead and his heroine, however here the male lead dictates terms of physical arrangements with the female lead within the framework of a contractual agreement of a sugar daddy in return for her services. This is not a journey of self discovery but an immediate transaction with tension between the two parties from the start of the novel and throughout the chapters.

Let’s talk about Christian Grey. You have to admit he’s an interesting character in Fifty Shades of Grey. Perhaps it’s his wealth and good looks, but I think there is more to this character than that. There is a powerful magnetism that draws people to him, his power and his vulnerability all wrapped up into one. His interactions with Anastasia are often charged with tension and his chemistry with her is palpable. The push and pull of their interactions kept me reading the book to find out what would happen next.

Much of Christian’s complexity comes from his dark past. His need to control in his relationships with others is clearly revealed throughout the book. As a character, Christian Grey has gained a lot of respect and also a lot of criticism from readers. The novelist describes the young billionaire as a charismatic and pretty enigmatic man. However, beneath his stunning exterior is a complex and very sensitive soul. He is a dominant man who likes to have his way with women but with Grey it is so much more than that. He is a damaged young man who has experienced a lot of suffering in his youth and is still trying to come to terms with his past. His past is why he is so drawn to young and naieve college student Anastasia Steele.

Throughout the series we see the many contrasting emotions that Christian elicits from those around him. At times he is a handsome, charming and very convincing gentleman yet on other occasions he can be brooding and incredibly complex. One moment you can’t help but fall for him and the next you want to shake him until his eyes open! The emotional rollercoaster that is Christian Grey is an amazing read. And watching his growth throughout the series is like watching layers of a very complex onion being slowly peeled away to reveal the vulnerable Christian hiding beneath.

For me, there is a great balance of suspense and romance in the Fifty Shades books and that’s why I love him, even though there are times when I want to slap him into reality! There is always a sense of tension in the books, which keeps the reader wanting more and I think that’s what makes for a great story!

Oh no, do we have to read about this guy? I've had this character streaming through me for years now. Christian Grey is an awful, poorly written, power fantasy. The whole world has been tricked into thinking that jealousy and possessiveness are romantic. That's my big impression of him: he's the reason for the glut of the last few years of romance novels by debut authors featuring as their dashing hero a billionaire CEO. The market has become saturated with books by novice authors, all deliberately vomiting out veneered copies of Fifty Shades of Grey, the brooding, dominant and hideously, disgustingly controlling hero of which makes you shudder with loathing or sigh with desperation, according to your personality. Christian Grey is not a great complicated hero. He makes you think. This guy just makes you cringe or sigh.

He lacks a certain amount of charm when compared to other leading men in literature. For instance, Mr. Darcy is very prideful and awkward in many situations but he is also very witty. Then there is Rhett Butler in Gone With the Wind, he is a big scoundrel but he is also very funny and has a lot of charisma. Lastly, there is Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey. He is intense and does not have a lot of humor in the book but he does have a lot of intensity and he is very wealthy, which can be charming in a different way. For me, his charm is his seriousness, his competence and how different he is to the boys that Ana is used to. But as far as being a long term book boyfriend, I think he would be hard to fall in love with because he does not have a lot of banter or smiles in the book.

The banter was more natural than the two of them trying to be cute in person. The emails gave a glimpse into the sharp, businesslike tech person that Christian is, and he was so playful in his text messages.
