Anyone else feel like the 'strong female protagonist' has become its own cage? She has to be physically tough, emotionally hardened, and sarcastically dismissive of romance (at first) to be taken seriously. Her coming-of-age arc is often about learning to 'balance' strength with vulnerability, as if vulnerability is a weakness to be managed rather than a integral part of humanity. I'd love to see more bestsellers where a girl's journey to maturity is about embracing sensitivity, creativity, or collaborative leadership as her core strength, without an obligatory combat training montage.

The market saturation makes it hard to tell sometimes. Is a book a bestseller because it portrays coming of age in a uniquely truthful way, or because it perfectly replicates the proven beats of last year's mega-hit? There's a lot of copycatting, which leads to a homogenized portrayal where the settings and magic systems get swapped out, but the emotional milestones are identical. It takes a truly original voice to break through that noise and show us a fresh perspective on growing up.

Can we talk about side characters for a second? The protagonist's journey is always front and center, but the best portrayals show how coming of age is relational. The friend who outgrows them, the mentor who betrays them, the rival who understands them—these relationships force the main character to constantly re-evaluate themselves. In a lot of bestsellers, though, the side cast can become archetypal (the loyal best friend, the wisecracking sibling) just to service the protagonist's arc, which flattens the whole social reality of growing up. It makes the world feel constructed for their benefit, which is its own kind of fantasy.

Is it just me, or does every faction in a dystopia represent a different, extreme response to growing up? You've got the faction that values erudition (the brains), the one that values bravery (the jocks), the one that values selflessness (the caregivers), the one that values honesty (the blunt truth-tellers). The protagonist's journey often involves seeing the value and limitation in each, ultimately synthesizing their own path. It's a heavy-handed but effective allegory for trying on different identities and ideologies before building your own.

Okay, but the fashion descriptions in fantasy YA? Always impeccable. Even in the muddiest battle, the hero's leather armor is cool. Coming of age apparently includes developing a flawless aesthetic sense for your biome. I'm just saying, if I had to save the world, my outfit would not be that coordinated.

I'm tired of the 'exceptional trauma' model. It seems like every protagonist has a dead parent, a tragic past, or is part of a persecuted group. While these stories are important, it creates a narrow vision where profound growth only emerges from extreme suffering. What about the quiet, everyday awakening that comes from privilege, boredom, or simple curiosity? Coming-of-age can happen in a stable, loving home through smaller epiphanies. The focus on trauma can, ironically, make the ordinary process of maturation feel inadequate or unworthy of a grand narrative. Not every teen needs to be a survivor to have a meaningful journey toward selfhood.
