I deserved better, this stupid year was just kicking my ass. Assuring myself of this, I took a deep breath out, running a hand through my hair as I crossed the road, headed straight into the library, putting my phone into my jacket pocket. The town library was exceptionally big, not too large though, but I must admit could hold quite a lot of books as they were rows upon rows. I made my way straight to the books about fantasy creatures, realizing that they were surprisingly many. Young Adult fantasy is a thing...like a big deal, I noted reading through so interesting titles, but not the specific one I was looking for.

I said waving the book at his face. "Can I see? he inquired smiling. I nodded and stretched the book to him. "Slave to the Ruthless Master" he read aloud raising his brows. "This is an 18+ rated story" he said and eyed me. "What? I'm almost 18. It's just two months remaining" I defended. And it's not as if I haven't seen worse. What could be worse than what I caught Jayden doing today in the washroom? It's a human story that talked about a girl whom was sold by her father to a ruthless master who killed people without a second thought.

"I... I mean, the boys at school look at me all the time, but they don't say anything. I think because I'm the president of the Bible and Abstinence Club, they think I'm a prude." "The Bible and Abstinence Club," Ryder repeated, a dark, mocking chuckle vibrating in his chest. "Wow. So no nookie for your boyfriend until marriage, then? You're saving that tight little hole for a wedding night?" Ruth-Ann looked down into her lap, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Are you ready for that confession now?" "I've been dying to hear it," Ryder whispered, standing right over her now. His scent made her mouth water. "I promised Dante that we'd do it at prom."

I never meant to stay this late. The university library usually kicked everyone out by ten, but I’d sweet-talked Mr. Kane into letting me finish pulling books for my thesis. He was the quiet type, the one who barely looked up from his desk most days. Tall, dark hair always a little messy, glasses that made his green eyes sharper. I’d had a crush on him since freshman year. Pathetic, right? A twenty-one-year-old student crushing on the thirty-something librarian who probably saw me as just another noisy undergrad.

How could I be a warrior when I was the one who always needed rescuing? After my fourteenth birthday, after everything changed, the fantasy stories ended, and I found myself reading through encyclopedias. Reference books. Regional histories. Anything to increase my understanding of the world that I'd never been permitted to see. I became ravenous for information. It was the only glimpse into the lands outside of Snow Pointe I could get.

The book is published on a Tuesday in October. It arrives in boxes at the foundation. Real physical books with my name on the cover and the story of everything that came after inside. The second book. The one about healing and ice rituals and children growing up and the specific mundane work of choosing someone again and again.

Fiction is meant to evoke emotion, but never at the cost of your mental or emotional health. Everyone processes stories differently, and what is thrilling for one reader may be overwhelming for another. Please proceed with awareness and care. AUTHOR'S NOTE: Before you dive into this story, I want to share something personal with you. I wrote this novel when I was just thirteen years old. At the time, I had no formal training in writing, no grasp of complex literary techniques, and very little understanding of storytelling rules. All I had was a vivid imagination, a notebook (or keyboard), and the desire to bring my characters to life.
