My intro was through regional literature: 'Khasakkinte Itihasam' (The Legends of Khasak) by O.V. Vijayan, in translation. It's a surreal, philosophical novel set in a remote village. The magical realism and deep spiritual undertones were completely different from any Western fiction I'd read. It felt like discovering a secret, mystical side of storytelling rooted in a specific Indian consciousness. That sent me exploring the rich world of Indian literature in translation from various languages.

This is random, but this thread reminds me of the smell of old bookshops in college towns, where I'd hunt for some of these titles. The physical act of browsing, finding a dog-eared copy of 'The God of Small Things' or a new paperback of 'The White Tiger'... that was part of the ritual that got me hooked as much as the stories themselves.

Honestly? I scrolled through all these answers and I'm just here to say I still haven't found an Indian novel that truly grabbed me. I keep trying, but maybe my tastes just lie elsewhere. Anyone else feel that way, or is it just me? No disrespect to the authors, of course.

I got into reading via audiobooks during long drives. The one that hooked me was the brilliant narration of 'A Fine Balance' by Rohinton Mistry. Yes, it's devastatingly sad, but the characters of Dina, Ishvar, Omprakash, and Maneck are rendered with such tenderness and humanity that you can't let them go. Hearing their voices made the tragedy even more poignant. It was an immersive experience that made me appreciate the narrative depth of novels in a new way.

Lurking this thread for recommendations. My exposure to Indian novels is pretty much limited to the big names I had to study. This is giving me a lot of titles to check out beyond the usual syllabus. Nice to see such varied starting points.

Which best selling novels of India are ideal for first-time readers?

I wonder if poetry could be a more immediate, visceral introduction. Reading a collection by someone like Tishani Doshi or Arundhathi Subramaniam offers concentrated bursts of imagery, emotion, and cultural reflection. It's less of a time investment and can be more directly atmospheric. Poetry often communicates the essence of a place or feeling faster than a novel's plot. It's an unconventional suggestion, but for a certain type of reader, it might be the most powerful door in.

Which best selling Indian novel is most influential for young readers?

I'm skeptical of 'influence' claims for recent bestsellers. True influence is seen in retrospect, over a decade or more. Ask this again in 2035, and we'll see if today's popular authors like Ravinder Singh or Preeti Shenoy actually shaped perspectives or just provided momentary diversion. Real influence changes how people think or act. Right now, I'd credit non-fiction like 'Everybody Loves a Good Drought' for influencing young activists more than any novel on the current charts.

What classic Indian novels should every new reader start with?

I find the focus on Booker Prize winners a bit limiting. There's a whole world of wonderful Indian writing in English that isn't as celebrated in the West. Take 'Serious Men' by Manu Joseph, for instance. It's a satirical, darkly comic novel about a sly Dalit office worker who tries to game the system by passing his son off as a genius. It's sharply observant about class, scientific pretension, and urban Mumbai life. It's funny, cynical, and deeply human. Exploring beyond the most famous prize lists can lead you to gems that have a more contemporary, gritty, or unconventional voice. Bookers are great, but they're not the whole story.

Try a graphic novel. 'Kashmir Pending' by Naseer Ahmed and Saurabh Singh uses the noir comic form to explore the complexity of the Kashmir conflict through the story of a jailed militant. It’s visually striking and offers a perspective that’s hard to find in traditional novels. The graphic novel medium is producing some of India's most exciting narratives.

A novel that deserves more attention is 'The Circle of Reason' by Amitav Ghosh. It’s his debut, a riotous, picaresque adventure following a weaver accused of terrorism. It’s packed with ideas, humor, and movement. It’s less polished than his later work but bursting with ambition and energy. Shows the early spark of a major writer.

Which best selling novels by Indian authors focus on Indian history?

My two cents: don't overlook older classics like 'Kanthapura' by Raja Rao. It's about the Gandhian independence movement as seen from a small village. It's not a breezy read—it uses a unique oral storytelling style—but it's a foundational text of Indian writing in English. It shows how a global political movement filtered down to the grassroots. It's more of a novella, but it's powerful. It might not be a 'bestseller' in today's sense, but it's a classic that has stayed in print for decades. Sometimes the older perspectives are the most authentic to the time they depict.
