Basically, BookTok is the part of TikTok where book lovers hang out. It’s a massive community of readers (and some authors) who post short videos recommending, reviewing, or just fangirling/fanboying over books. Most of the time, these videos use the hashtag #BookTok.
It all started when someone casually shared their favorite books, and it just exploded from there. Now, it’s huge — mostly dominated by teens and women, with a focus on genres like romance, young adult fiction, fantasy, and the like.
Why is it a big deal? Because it actually sells books. Like, a lot. If a book goes viral on BookTok, you can bet it’ll end up on bestseller lists — even if it was published years ago. Colleen Hoover’s It Ends With Us is a perfect example. The book came out in 2016, but thanks to BookTok, it sold over 770k copies in 2021 alone. Same with They Both Die at the End and The Song of Achilles — both older books that blew up because of TikTok.
Publishers and bookstores have caught on, too. They watch what’s trending on BookTok to know what people are into. Since 2020, YA and adult fiction have seen huge spikes in sales, with overall print book sales in the U.S. growing by around 9%, largely thanks to BookTok.
As a reader, it’s a goldmine. You get quick, relatable recs, short summaries, and tons of "If you liked X, read Y" style videos. Super helpful if you're building your
TBR list or just looking for your next obsession.
BookTok is changing the way books get discovered and hyped — and it’s not slowing down anytime soon.
