Camping out in this thread because I need to update my TBR list. My reads have been stuck in fantasy worlds lately, and I'm craving something set in a real, breathing city. All these suggestions are giving me serious wanderlust, just through book settings. Might start with one of those Pacific Northwest ones—the rain and coffee description really got me.
Honestly, I feel like we're in a 'fake small town' renaissance. Authors invent these idyllic, vaguely New England or Pacific Northwest hamlets that are completely divorced from economic reality. Where does everyone work? How does a town of 2,000 people support three artisanal cheese shops and a bespoke stationery store? I love the cozy vibe, but my suspension of disbelief only stretches so far.
That said, when it's done well, it's magic. The setting provides a sense of safety and belonging that readers crave. The fictional town of Cedar Ridge or Hope's Crossing becomes a place you want to revisit in every book in the series. It's less about realism and more about crafting a comforting, predictable world where love is guaranteed to win in the end.
I'd love to see more variety, though. Give me a romance set in a mid-sized, struggling rust belt city, or a sprawling Sun Belt suburb. There's drama and connection to be found in places that aren't postcard-perfect, but that might require a different kind of storytelling muscle.

Wait, has anyone mentioned the 'two cities in one' trope? Like, a romance that splits time between a character's professional, high-stakes life in a downtown financial district and their personal, creative life in a bohemian outer neighborhood. The love interest often belongs to one world and intrudes on the other, causing a clash of personas.
The setting literally shows the character's internal divide. The sleek, cold office tower versus the messy, warm artist's studio apartment. The journey is about integrating these two selves, and the love interest is the catalyst. The city's geography maps directly onto the protagonist's psyche. Getting from one zone to the other—by subway, by bike—becomes a physical representation of their emotional commute between different parts of their life. It's a smart use of urban layout to externalize character conflict.
