My approach is always to sample first. Read the first chapter on Amazon or Google Books preview. If the writing grabs you, you'll forget all about what format it's in. A story that pulled me in immediately was 'The Worst Best Man' by Mia Sosa. The banter between the wedding planner and the consultant is crackling, and the Venezuelan-American family dynamics are hilarious and heartfelt.

I ended up buying the audiobook because the narrators brought so much extra life to the characters. Format became an afterthought.

I appreciate the focus on legal access in this thread. As someone who knows a few mid-list authors, those pirated PDFs directly impact their ability to keep writing. The royalties from even a $4.99 ebook sale mean so much more than people realize. If you love a book you found, leave a review! That's worth its weight in gold for helping other readers find these stories.

Stories like 'The Austen Playbook' by Lucy Parker (more London theatre scene, but with a wonderfully diverse supporting cast) thrive on word of mouth.

Think beyond just the couple's ethnicity. A great modern love story can be multicultural in terms of class, religion, or even subculture. 'You Had Me at Hola' by Alexis Daria is a brilliant take on two Puerto Rican actors with very different approaches to their careers and fame—it's about cultural nuances within a shared heritage. Super engaging.

It's widely available as an ebook, and I think some subscription services like Scribd might have it, which is like a Netflix for books.

If all else fails and you're desperate for a specific out-of-print book, consider used book websites that sell digital versions. While rare, some sellers offer scanned PDFs of older books. The legality is murky, but it's more ethical than a random piracy site because you're at least paying a seller who owns the physical copy. This is really a last resort for obscure titles, not for new releases.

For modern stories, though, the options listed above are far better and support the authors directly.

A different tactic: search for 'own voices multicultural romance' on Goodreads lists. Those lists are user-generated and often massive. Find a book that intrigues you, then click through to its page. In the 'ebook' section, it will often have a link to Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc. From there, you can see if the publisher or author website is listed for direct sales. It's a bit circuitous, but it's a targeted way to build a wishlist of legitimate purchase options, which is better than a wild PDF chase.
