Orwell’s ‘1984’ is less a prediction and more a warning that feels perpetually relevant. The concepts of Big Brother, Newspeak, and thoughtcrime have entered the global lexicon. Its chilling depiction of totalitarian control ensures its place on lists focused on political or dystopian literature. It’s a book that shapes how you see the world.
I feel like ‘Anna Karenina’ gets mentioned even more than ‘War and Peace’ in ‘best novel ever’ conversations. Tolstoy’s opening line is iconic, and his portrayal of Anna’s social destruction and Levin’s spiritual searching is breathtaking in its empathy and scope. The famous observation about unhappy families being unhappy in their own ways? That’s just the start.
Conrad’s ‘Heart of Darkness’ is short but immensely dense and controversial. Its critique of colonialism’s brutality through the journey into the Congo is powerful, though its portrayal of Africa and Africans is rightly criticized. It’s a difficult, essential, and problematic text that sparks endless debate, which is part of why it remains on lists.
My hot take? 'The Great Gatsby' is on those lists more for its perfect, concise encapsulation of the American Dream’s failure than for page-turning plot. Fitzgerald’s prose is just luminous, every sentence polished to a shine. It’s short enough that most people read it in school, which solidifies its 'classic' status. The symbolism is taught to death, but that first-party scene description still gives me chills. It’s a vibe, a mood, a tragedy in under two hundred pages.

He is the most terrifying man in the Empire—Hadrian, the Lord Protector. Cold, ruthless, and dictatorial, he rules the chaotic world with an iron fist, crushing rebellions without mercy. To the world, he is a monster devoid of human emotion; a tyrant who bathes in blood.
She is a rose growing in the mire—an ordinary, low-born girl struggling to survive in the slums. She possesses nothing but her pride and a fragile life.
Their worlds should never have collided. But in a twist of fate amidst the smoke of revolution, the lofty Dictator set his eyes on the humble commoner.
He didn't know how to love, so he used the only method he knew: Conquest. He clipped her wings, trapped her in his gilded cage, and forced her to bloom only for him.
"You fear me," Hadrian whispered, his fingers tracing her trembling lips. "Good. Because in this lifetime, you will never escape me."
In a game of power and submission, can a tyrant learn to kneel for love? And can a bird in a cage tame the beast?
What about 'The Scarlet Letter'? It’s a staple of American literature classes, so it finds its way onto many canonical lists, if not always reader-favorite ones.
We talking strict novels? Because 'Hamlet' and 'The Odyssey' would top many all-time literature lists, but they're plays and epic poems. The novel-centric lists always feel a bit arbitrary to me, privileging one form over others.
