Are There Any Comedy And Romance Books Similar To Popular Animes?

I also really love anime adaptations of modern romance novels, particularly of pretty up-to-date works. The modern novel Horimiya, for instance, is a very recent and very unique take on the high school romance between two complete opposites, and the anime does their interactions so perfectly. It is very cleanly paced, and the beautiful anime really brings out the cozy and loving aspects of the novel. ‘The Ancient Magus’ Bride’ is a rich, fantasy-based adaptation of romance novels, with very evocative animation of a mystical world, and an unfolding, unconventional relationship between the Ancient Magus (a sorcerer) and his apprentice, a young girl who was sold to him by her parents. A beautifully-shot film with great production values, it’s a heartfelt romance that will move you to tears. For a more melancholic take on romance novels adapted into anime, ‘Orange’ is a great option, as it explores a complex mix of sci-fi and romance with a powerful and emotional storyline.

Honestly, I'm so done with this trope right now. It was sort of fun in a younger, more naive time for me, but now I just see it as lazy character development and writing. I want to read romances where there is conflict for reasons other than a male protagonist trying to mark the female love interest as his. Most of the anime adaptations of these types of stories just reuse the same images of scowling close-ups of the male lead and shots of wind blowing through his hair. It would be awesome to read an adaptation of a romance where the male lead was supporting and hilarious in his attempts to be possessive. A real rom-com where the male lead is secure and the comedy comes from elsewhere would be amazing. The jealous male love interest as a sign of passion and depth is a tired script that needs to retire.

I always recommend Denise Hunter because she writes clean romance so well and always creates believable emotional wounds and healing in her characters. My favorite of hers is The Wishing Season which is a live-in cook-off for a house. Her characters are very real with lots of past hurts and present fears but in the end they get to heal and find love. Her books often have a spiritual element but it’s usually light. She focuses mostly on grace and how people can get second chances. For another authors who write clean romance I really enjoy reading Susan May Warren, especially her Deep Haven series which is a fictional MN town and has that one town kind of feeling as well as a good community backbone which is typically found in Hallmark movies and series. The characters and stories have a lot of higher stakes especially in a search-and-rescue type of career which makes for good storylines that keep you wanting to read more but still end up hopeful in the end for the romance.

Just lurking here as I have the complete opposite problem. I devour MC romances and thought, given my love for those, that I’d adore Sons of Anarchy as well. Unfortunately, I couldn’t even make it through the first season. Part of it felt really slow to me. Is the rest of the series really that much faster or is it just so much different from what I’m used to in the books?

I actually got into number theory because of a comment made in an episode of ‘The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya’ regarding the concept of ‘closed timelike curves’ and how they could be used to commit the ultimate crime. It was a throw away comment and after looking up the concept, I went down a rabbit hole of learning about physics and math, and the rest is history. Anime doesn’t need to teach the math in order to inspire curiosity in the subject. The best adaptation is one that makes you pause the anime and go google Fourier transform after a character casually mentioned it in the context of the story.

After finishing “Mai Chan’s Daily Life,” I was on the hunt for something similar. While “Franken Fran” does not deal with personal suffering in the same way, it is another dark medical comedy. Rather than a typical hero, Fran’s “solutions” to her patients’ problems are equally creative and terrifying, in a different way. Being a episodic read, it is a very different experience from “Daily Life.” Ibitsu is another ‘surreal’ horror story (it’s not really ‘scary’). The main plot point is a young girl being stalked by her ‘sister’ which is really hideous. The tension escalates to an uncomfortable point and then falls off in a pretty facets-wrapped-up kind of way. Yes, it’s really that haunting.

I couldn’t find much father-daughter romance books in the Japanese literature. Japan tends to read more traditional styles of literature and fantasy. Many of the stories about family relationships focus on establishing or healing relationships, rather than romance. This is why works of literature such as Clannad depict only parent-child love in a purely emotional sense. Of course there are exceptions to this in experimental works that broach taboo themes, but in the majority of cases these would not be considered ‘mainstream’ and are unlikely to be found in local bookstores. Popular romance novels are largely confined to school settings, supernatural plot lines or workplace-based tales, and for something more substantial but non-romantic between a father and daughter, you might want to look to The Girl Who Leapt Through Time or March Comes in Like a Lion.

It is often the point of a serious work on absurdity to be humorous. Much humor in war literature comes from the obvious illogic of the system and the ways in which the unwise decisions of higher-ups lead to more horror. The famous Catch-22 circular reasoning that keeps Yossarian in combat is as funny as it is stupid. And the humor is the point of the comedy: in laughing at a joke we understand its stupidity. Thus the humor of a war story is usually closely aligned with the horror of the story as well.

This sort of tension packed into a very small space of high stakes is also found in ‘Reborn as the villain’s obsession [MM romance]’ where the protagonist is trapped inside a strict fortress like domain of the antagonist. The pressure cooked, claustrophobic, atmospheric tension between them as they are surrounded by this powerful force is very similar to that found in Attack on Titan, although this story is a character driven romance rather than a struggle for survival.

I’ve seen tons of people online wax poetic about how much they love fanfiction for really popular fantasy novels, and honestly I can see why. For one, the A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones) fandom is HUGEnormous, and so there are thousands of stories about Daenerys and Jon Snow, as well as all sorts of original character/dragon rider pairings. But most particularly, within that huge and dedicated fanbase, there are also tons of really passionately-written novel-length fics that follow the many, many characters in the series through all sorts of scenarios, not least of which is the huge pool of political marriage tropes. I went to Archive of Our Own and searched for the tag “Arranged Marriage” within the A Song of Ice and Fire category, and oh. My. God. There are some seriously, seriously well-written novels there. These writers are operating completely within the parameters of the existing story, and thus are able to be totally immersed in the world and its politics, to craft scenarios that feel completely natural to the characters and the universe in which they reside. And the best part? It’s free. You can read them for yourself, and can see for yourself the incredible amounts of passion and love that the writers have put into these stories.
