In the world of anime, there are many stories of possessive love such as Maid Sama! and the intense protection of Kyo from Fruits Basket. But none bring as much to the table as the werewolf romance novel ‘Her Possessive Mate’. The title alone speaks volumes of the concept and how it will play out throughout the story of a destined mate bond between a human woman and her werewolf male mate. His primal instincts will cause so much friction and drama with the female lead as she tries to maintain her independence.

I’ve compiled a list of my favorite romance anime with possessive male leads adapted from books or manga. I’ve watched enough of these to classify them as a guilty pleasure. In the historical epic ‘Yona of the Dawn’ the main male character Hak shows an unwavering devotion to Yona and will protect her from any threats. In ‘Fruits Basket’ the main male character Kyo has a rough exterior but is very protective of the main female character Tohru.

Another example for darker stories would be ‘The World is Still Beautiful’ with a king who is still very tyrannical in his daily life but is totally lovely to the female lead of the story. ‘Kamisama Kiss’ by Methodist is also very nice, it features Tomoe who is a typical tsundere character and in this story mostly we see his protectiveness towards the female lead in a very comedic and also very serious way at the same time. These adaptations are great because they do a good job at portraying the characters’ flaws and how they grow from them. Plus, most of the time the adaptations are also very beautifully done with great animation and wonderful soundtracks that emphasize the romantic parts of the story.

As someone who is always on the lookout for romance novels that are adapted into anime with intense and possessive male leads, I really enjoy “Dakaretai Otoko 1-i ni Odosarete Imasu” or rather “The Two sides (1st) of the Actor”, a play which follows a well known actor who slowly becomes obsessively possessive of his co-star in this adaption. This anime has to be one of the most tensed out I have ever read and seen. It also depicts the way this male lead can assert his dominance while also masking his vulnerability which is extremely sexy and I give it a well done chef’s kiss. “Wolf Girl and Black Prince” is another great anime where the way the male lead teases the heroine and controls her is almost to the point of being toxic but is also extremely tantalizing. Usui from “Kaichou wa Maid-sama!” is also a very possessive character and his cool and calculated way of possession conceals his true feelings of possession. These are all the types of scenarios that fans of possessive males can get into.

Possessive anime? Get ready to have your needs met with these recommendations for anime featuring possessive male leads! First off, “Midnight Secretary” is a steamy adaptation of the manga about to transfer to work for a certain vampire boss. The boss in question is OBSESSED with his secretary, displaying a dangerously chilly indifference to his office worker’s life by day and, by night, a scorching jealousy which he is powerless to resist. Next up is “Love and Lies”, which focuses on a young man who, having lost the heroine to a government-assigned partner, is struggling to come to terms with his loss. His possessiveness is palpable and feels very real.

A great take on the typical possessive male lead in fantasy is found in ‘The Ancient Magus’ Bride’ with the enigmatic Elias learning to love and protect Chise throughout the story. And then there is ‘Special A’s’ Kei who treats his female love interest as if she were his number one rival, but in a playful and somewhat arrogant manner. Cases such as these create a rich story filled with both drama and passion when executed correctly.

One of the underappreciated parts of an anime is the voice acting. A good seiyuu can turn an otherwise possessive line into something creepy, romantic, or even humorous. This is evident in how Mamoru Miyano portrays Light Yagami in the anime ‘Death Note’. Although Death Note is not a romance, Light’s possessiveness of the Death Note as well as his god complex are intense to watch. This especially comes across in how creepy and intense his possessiveness as well as god complex are. For romance, characters like Usui from ‘Maid-sama!’ are voiced so that he sounds calm and confident at a low tone. As a result, possessive lines by him are portrayed as facts rather than desperation. The voice acting really brings more charisma to the characters than their original counterparts, making them more popular. The voice acting really sells the fantasy of these characters.
