There are many online tools available to convert your Manga chapters to PDFs. My two favorites to use are ‘MangaToPDF’ and ‘OnlineConvertFree’. The ‘MangaToPDF’ website allows you to upload individual images or even an entire CBZ file and it will generate a single PDF from them all. The website is very easy to use and does not require any technical knowledge of how to use the tool.

Additionally to MangaToPDF I use PDFChef.com to give the resulting PDF a polish (e.g. to merge single chapters into one PDF, to add bookmarks). When converting a chapter, pages are usually in reverse order. Manga is read right-to-left, so if you’re converting from a website already mirrored for a western audience, the PDF will be fine. But if you’re converting from a raw Japanese website or scanlation that hasn’t changed the orientation of the pages, the pages in the PDF will be in reverse order. This means you need a converter that can reverse the image order before creating the PDF.

As noted above, many of the more advanced online tools for converting image files to PDF have a checkbox to reverse the order of the pages. There’s an older way of thinking about digital comics that revolves around PDFs. They were the go-to digital comics format about 10 years ago, and since then, so many excellent comic book reader apps have emerged for every platform. The container format (CBZ, CBR) is far superior to PDF because it’s simply a zip file, which contains the comics without any loss of quality, and can be easily opened and read in any of the aforementioned apps. Should you ever need to, the package can also be easily converted to a PDF, but not the other way around, as there’s a huge risk of quality being lost in translation when creating a PDF from comics.

Stop trying to make a PDF and instead get the images in the correct order. Then use a tool to collect them without any quality loss. You can then read the package of images in the app you used to collect them, or later create a PDF for whatever reason you need to in the future.

There is a simple reason for this: because we can do it better locally. Download the chapter images (responsibly) and then add them to a LibreOffice document (or even to Microsoft Word), saving it as a PDF in the end. Yes, it takes a few more minutes, but you can then arrange everything exactly as you like, you can fix any pages that were ordered incorrectly and most importantly, there is no quality loss when converting on a server compared to locally.

It is all a bit of a black box when it comes to online file conversion tools. For something that you wish to keep, to read again in the future, then spending a few minutes of your time to create a PDF in a more traditional manner, will be well worth it. In fact it will feel like you have created your own personal digital volume, just as you had envisioned.

Use a browser’s “Save Page As…”. For simple websites, saving a page as a “Web Page, Complete” can produce a zip file that contains HTML files and a folder with all the images. Ignore the HTML and use the images in the folder. This is a completely native, no-extension-required method to scrape older websites. It won’t work on sites that use a lot of JavaScript to read content, but it’s good enough for simple sites. And from there you can combine the images with whatever method you prefer to create a PDF.

Note that this method will not work on websites that are read in by JavaScript, but it is a very simple method to get images from relatively simple websites. You can then combine the images into a PDF document as you like with any method. As a first step to scraping a website always try to use the simplest native browser function first.

My two cents: instead of looking for an online conversion tool, focus on the download method and master it. While it might seem the hardest part, getting high-quality images of the correct order off a website is actually much easier than one would think. Once you have that, making a PDF is the easiest task that a million tools can do for you. So you should rather look for browser extensions or download managers that are great for “gallery grabbing” – and there are tons of them. Some examples: Batch Link Downloader extension, JDownloader software.

Mastering the download is half the battle, and the conversion to PDF is a trivial task that can be performed with any number of existing tools. So solving to find the perfect online converter to solve your problem is halfway to nowhere.

This means that images which have been scanned at low resolution or which have been heavily compressed will not be improved by any conversion process. Eventually they will be produced as a very poor PDF and this is simply 'garbage in, garbage out'.

Most browsers have a “Print to PDF” function. Most people don’t realize that there are default settings for the margins in PDF Print to PDF functions. So, if you’re creating PDFs of your manga and they have huge white borders around the pages, check the Print function for the PDF to see if there’s a setting for the margins. Set them to “None” or “Minimum”. Also, uncheck the boxes for “Headers and Footers” as you don’t want the URL of the webpage that you’re printing from and the date to be printed at the bottom of every page of your manga.

Most people are unaware of the relatively small number of settings that can alter the appearance of a PDF in this way, and so end up printing a normal webpage, and not a ‘manga page’ as intended. Experimenting with the various print preview options to alter these few settings will reveal just how easily a relatively professional looking PDF can be created in a couple of minutes, as opposed to completing a 'hack job' that could have taken hours.
