What Is The Correct Mercy Thompson Reading Order Including Novellas?

My shelf is a mess after a Mercy Thompson series binge. Does Alpha and Omega fit in? I need the correct timeline for novellas too.

The audiobook narrator, Lorelei King, is a goddess. She does all the voices, even the males, perfectly. If you’re going audio, your order might be limited by what’s available on your app. The main novels are all there. 'Shifting Shadows' is there. But the individual anthologies containing 'Homecoming' or 'Seeing Eye'? Often not. So your ‘correct’ audio order might be: main series, then 'Shifting Shadows'. You might miss a couple of stories, but you’ll get 95% of the content. And hearing King perform Ben or Asil’s stories is a treat worth waiting for.

I approach series like a TV show. The novels are the seasons. The novellas are the webisodes or special episodes. You can watch the seasons and understand everything. The webisodes add cool backstory for side characters, but they’re not required for the season finale to make sense. So, watch Season 1 ('Moon Called'). If you love it, maybe seek out the webisodes before Season 2. Or just binge the seasons and watch the webisodes later when you’re missing the show. There’s no 'correct' watch order for TV shows, and I think the same applies here.

I read 'Homecoming' first, before any novel, because I found the anthology in a sale. It was a fascinating entry point. I met Mercy as a vulnerable, younger mechanic, not the badass she becomes. Starting there made reading 'Moon Called' feel like a reunion with an old friend who’d been through a lot. So, unconventional orders can offer unique perspectives. There’s no single correct path. There’s your path. The series is strong enough to withstand a little chronological shuffling.

I see this question pop up every month in the fan group. The consensus usually fractures into two camps: Pure Publication vs. Chronological Immersion. I fall in the middle. I think the best experience is to read the novels in order, but immediately after finishing each novel, read any novellas that are set just before or after it. This requires a guide, but it keeps the side stories fresh and relevant. For example, after 'Frost Burned', reading 'Roses in Winter' explains so much about a certain character's absence. It’s like having post-episode bonus features for your book.

My perspective is from a re-read. The first time, I did publication order. The second time, I wove in all the novellas chronologically. And you know what? The second read was better. Knowing the full arc from the novels, the novellas added layers of foreshadowing and character nuance I’d missed. So maybe there’s no single ‘correct’ order, but an ideal cycle. Read the novels first to get the story. Then, on your inevitable re-read (because you’ll want one), integrate the shorts. You’ll catch all the connections and appreciate Briggs’s world-building on a whole new level.

In what order should you read the Mercy Thompson novels and novellas?

You know, I never read the novellas. Just the main novels. Loved every minute. I don't feel like I missed anything crucial to Mercy and Adam's story. The extras are for superfans, which I am, but I just haven't gotten to them yet.

Goodreads shelves are a lifesaver. If you look up the Mercy Thompson series page, fans have created 'listopia' lists with correct reading orders, including shorts. You can save those lists and check off books as you go. It's social and practical. Just be wary of lists that include the 'Alpha and Omega' books intermixed; that's a specialized order for a combined universe reread, not the standard entry point.

Is the comic book adaptation of 'Homecoming' considered canon? And where does that fit? This universe keeps expanding.

For a first-time reader, I’d say: Mercy books 1-3, then Alpha & Omega novel 'Cry Wolf' (which includes the novella), then continue mixing from there using a list. That gives you a solid grounding in both leads before the timelines get deeply intertwined.

What is the complete Mercy Thompson series in reading order?

Can we appreciate the cover art evolution? The early US covers with the tattooed back are iconic, but the later ones get more dynamic. Watching the cover style change as you progress through the reading order is a subtle, fun meta-experience. It mirrors the series' own evolution from more straightforward urban fantasy mystery to epic-scale supernatural politics. Even the bookshelf aesthetic tells a story of growth.

How does the Mercy Thompson reading order align with the publication dates?

The correlation is essentially 1:1. As a bookseller, I always point customers to the publication order for this series. It's the path of least resistance and the way the story is structured to be absorbed. Foreshadowing pays off, relationships develop, and threats escalate exactly as the release schedule dictates. Trying to read it differently is like assembling furniture without the instructions—you might eventually get it, but it'll be frustrating and you'll probably miss something important. Stick with the order the author gave us. It's there for a reason.

I'm just here for the werewolf politics and the fae machinations. The order I read them in was completely scrambled, and I still followed the politics. It's not that subtle.

Where do Mercy Thompson short stories belong in the series reading order?

The audiobook for 'Shifting Shadows' is a godsend. Having all those stories in one place, read by a consistent narrator (for the most part), is the easiest solution. Just listen to it after 'Night Broken.' Done. No hunting, no guessing, no buying ten anthologies.

In what order should a new reader approach the Mercy Thompson universe?

I'm waiting for someone to post a definitive, color-coded flowchart. Until then, I'm sticking with my method: I read whatever the library has available when I'm in the mood for a paranormal fix. It's led to a jumbled but enjoyable experience. I've pieced the timeline together retroactively, which is its own kind of fun.
