What about the extra short stories or side chapters floating around? Are those considered part of the reading order, or just bonus fluff for superfans? I've seen mentions of a 'Seizing the Stars' extra but have no idea where it fits.

Check the copyright pages or official publisher listings if you can. Sometimes fan communities get the order wrong by lumping separate series together. I believe the official stance is that 'Lighter and Princess' is a duology, and 'Waiting in the Youthful Times' is a standalone prequel. They're marketed as separate products. There is no single, multi-volume 'Lighter and Princess' series that includes the prequel as volume one. So the 'correct' reading order for the series proper is just the two books. The other is optional expanded universe material.

Be careful with fan translations! The titling is inconsistent. Some sites might label 'Waiting in the Youthful Times' as 'Lighter and Princess Prequel' or even 'Lighter and Princess Vol. 0', which adds to the confusion. Always cross-reference the original Chinese titles if you can. The core two are 《打火机与公主裙》and 《打火机与公主裙·天长地久》. The prequel is 《那些回不去的年少时光》. They are distinct works.

Man, the drama adaptation made this so much more confusing for everyone! The show blended storylines, but the novels are separate. You have the main duology: 'Lighter and Princess' (sometimes labeled Vol. 1) and its sequel, 'Lighter & Princess 2: Love of Tomorrow'. Then there's the prequel 'Waiting in the Youthful Times', which is about Li Xun's high school days. The 'correct' order for a first-timer is probably chronological by publication, which means starting with the main duology to get hooked, then circling back to the prequel if you're invested in the world.
Trying to read chronologically by timeline (starting with the high school prequel) might spoil some of the present-day narrative tension in the main books.

Honestly, the order matters less than just reading the first main book. It's the masterpiece of the set. The other two are expansions. If you don't love the first 'Lighter and Princess', you won't care about the order. If you do love it, you'll be happy to read anything else in that world, in any order. So just start there. It's the litmus test.

I envy anyone starting this journey fresh. The confusion, the emotional turmoil, the obsessive need to find every scrap of content... it's a rite of passage. Don't rush to find the 'right' order. Savor the discovery. Getting lost in the fandom wikis and fan art is half the fun.
I'm skeptical of anyone who says the side stories are mandatory. They're enjoyable fan service, but the main story concludes decisively at volume 52. If you're tight on time, stop there. You won't have nagging questions about the primary plot. The side stories explore 'what if' scenarios and side characters more deeply. So the 'correct' order depends on your appetite. For a complete story: 1-52. For the entire expanded universe: 1-52 plus SS 1-5. Choose your own adventure.
