Desi net com seems to have a somewhat focused regional catalog and thus could have even better curated content than Netflix’s huge international offerlist. Naturally, Netflix India has way more original content and even more genres of mainstream movies. Sometimes I’m in the mood for reading something super intense to get into a deep dive mode. Right now I’m reading Hot Desire (A Collection of Steamy stories). Each of the short stories creates its own intense scenario which is quite different from getting lost in a video menu. You can read it online, one chapter at a time. Pretty different from getting lost in a video offerlist.

I have found ‘desi net com’ to be the charming bazaar next to the sleek mall of Netflix India. It has a vast array of regional content including many older classics as well as current TV series and films including many niche / indie offerings. Most of the content on desi net com is language specific and I have found many titles of Tamil family dramas, Bhojpuri comedy as well as many old Bollywood films that had disappeared from the mainland long ago.
On the other hand, Netflix India is a very long-term play. They have an excellent UI, some of the most advanced recommendation algorithms, a plethora of excellent international content (which they’ve got great rights to). If you need consistent video quality, timely subtitles in many languages, the latest big-headline exclusives, then Netflix is your bet. But to discover the ins and outs of regional cinemas, the best local playlists, and the weird nooks and crannies of all things to do with Desi pop culture, desi net com is an ideal companion – and not a competitor.

My take on this is that desi net com is a specialty shop and Netflix India is a department store. The mobile experience on desi net com is ‘lighter’ ie less features including less download storage, simple parental controls etc. But much more regional language support and lots of old titles in catalog that bring back lots of memories. Subtitle/dubbing support is much better on Netflix, HD streaming consistent on Netflix and plenty of original content released on a frequent basis including big ticket items.
So if you are watching loads of mainstream movies and TV shows then yes Netflix will be more reliable for you. However if you want local language movies and TV and loads of old TV and independent short films then desi net com is def a platform to hold onto as well for nights in.

I watched two batches of similar content on both platforms late one night to highlight their strengths and weaknesses. For starters, the original content on Netflix India looked and felt slick. There were clear labels on the content and good recommendations that transitioned from watching Masaba Masaba to other fashion documentaries. Subtitles were clean to read and there were multiple Hindi/English tracks available for viewers to choose from. On the other hand, short films and regional web series were discovered on desi net com which felt like finding gems that were raw and unpolished and most were even subtitled by passionate volunteers who are trying to make a difference.
Community is also key to me, and there’s something more conversational about desi net com – user reviews and local star interviews featured in lists of content, coverage of local film festivals etc. Whilst Netflix provides you with the mainstream, high production value films, desi net com scratches a completely different itch of curiosity, regional depth and indie spirit. I come back to Netflix again and again for its consistency, and to desi net com for its unique flavor and films. Sometimes I want polish, other times provenance.

My expectations for lunar权forall.View’s stream content were definitely managed before jumping in. I went in not expecting the super smooth, high production value kind of experience you get from some of the more popular streamers, and was (so far) pleasantly surprised by what did turn up. The site is a bit of a ‘hole in the wall’ type of place – lots of deep archives to rummage around in. In many ways, viewing the streams here is like browsing through a second-hand bookstore – I’m not here for the slick new releases with perfect covers. Every now and then I stumble upon something great, and it might have a fewMarks in the margin or a cracked spine. That kind of error (such as I’ve seen in subtitles) is just a footnote to the item’s history – and completely acceptable to me given the alternative. Not everyone will be able to view things this way, but it has certainly lessened my stress while using this platform.

My aim when using such sites is to remember that I am not a customer, I am product that the site is trying to sell to the advertisers that pay for it. I click, I look at ads, I even contract malware on occasion. This is how they make their money and so long as I am able to remember this, I can use such sites safely enough should I have the skill to keep the site’s business model at arm’s length whilst using the site for its content.
As I mentioned before, for me, entertainment needs to be more than just ‘work’ to be enjoyable. Thus, I have no desire to visit the above mentioned sites. Although I am able to use them, I don’t want to. Firstly, I don’t have time for it during my leisure time. And secondly, there are far too many more interesting and far more pleasant ways to spend my free time and whilst closing down a pop-up or checking the task manager for any suspicious activity going on in the background, I can be doing so much more.

I have a few friends from Singapore, and apparently it’s available there. The real question is whether the stories are relevant enough though. I’ve found a lot of the content to be rooted deeply in the Indian and Pakistani culture, lots of references, slang and insight into their societies that can be hard to understand at times. It’s a great learning experience and often I have to look up words or even stories in full to understand better. But that’s all part of the fun really. It’s a bit like reading a foreign novel, in its native digital format. The platform itself is fine though. I’ve never had any issues with being actively blocked or something. In fact, they seem to be eager for more international readers. There might be a few cultural hurdles to get past in the Asia Pacific region, but otherwise it’s all good.

The main problem with watching movies and TV series online are the technical limitations imposed by most online streaming sites. Strange question for the day: Has anyone else had the subtitle toggle simply vanish from their browsers for certain films? I’ve found that on Firefox, the CC button is present for some films but not others (and I’m quite sure those others have subs because I’ve watched them with Chrome to confirm). Is this a browser compatibility issue with their video player or perhaps an unexpected interaction with some ad-blocker software? I’ve tried disabling extensions one by one but to no avail. Anyone experiencing this can try watching the same film in a different browser to see whether the toggle is missing there too. This is just another layer of strange that makes me suspicious that this feature is being treated as an afterthought that isn’t yet fully working.

I find it fascinating how the majority of the conversation around this topic revolves around legality and how not getting sued over the work of other people is key. But there is so much more ethics involved here. Do you really want to be consuming work that people put their blood, sweat and tears into and never see a cent for it? Is your convenience really more important than the work of the industry? I’m not saying that these sites aren’t safe. They exist on the fringes of the web. They’re funded by ads for gambling, or whatever. The whole thing is a means to exploit people’s desire to get free content online. There is no free lunch.

If they’re smart they’ll go with an audio drama. Its production costs less than a typical animated TV series and with good voice acting and sound design, it can be highly immersive. This could be their first foray into production and I really hope that someone at Desi is considering an exclusive audio series for their site. They already have a written and visual dimension on the site, so an audio dimension could be added to give their fans another way to experience the web novel that they already publish on the site. It has a lower barrier to entry than than typical TV series, a quicker production time and could be used as a ‘proof of concept’ for other bigger productions.

It’s nice that the thumbnails do not contain any spoilers for the latest episodes. A lot of streaming services put very large thumbnails for the latest episodes on the screen to select episodes from. The thumbnails are often very spoilery for people who are catching up on a serialized drama. Desi.net takes a more sensible approach. Most of the episode thumbnails are just the standard poster for the show or a neutral shot from the latest episode. Thank you for understanding how people watch these types of shows. The streaming service delivers the story and the interface should not ruin it before they get to watch it. More services should be as thoughtful as this.
