Will My Desi. Net Host Original Web Series And Exclusives?

As an avid desi. net member, I'm hoping for original content like Web series or exclusive stories. Will they host these soon, and maybe premiere original novels? The idea of platform-exclusive series excites me, so curious about their content strategy.

No major original series from Desi.Net in the near future, as the main focus seems to be gathering existing material to put up on the site, rather than producing lots of original work to sell exclusively on the site. If you want to read fresh original stories, then browsing their short story collections might be your best bet. I stumbled upon a free-to-read anthology of modern short stories with very character-orientated plots called 'Untamed Desires (A Collection of short Stories)' on the site last week. The feel of this particular collection is more current than much of the rest of their catalog, so hopefully Desi.Net will support more original work like this in the future.

Numbers and strategy tell me that desi. net is likely to host originals and exclusives at some point but that it’s not a given. The way platforms evolve to originals and exclusives is by first licensing a ton of content and slowly but surely building out a user base and developing into a reliable and consistent stream of revenue. All originals are expensive upfront. As well as the costs of developing, they require oversight of production, and sometimes legal review as well (for issues of IP). And then of course there’s marketing to get people to watch.

Exclusives can be a powerful branding tool. Deizi.net could lock short windows or try to do exclusive first run rights on some promising shows to drive sign-ups to the service. Also, co-productions can be a good way to share risk with indie studios, talent or even international buyers. I expect them to test the waters with some selective originals and exclusives before committing to a full program in a highly competitive market where viewer loyalty is earned slowly.

That makes sense. The only way that desi.net could be successful is if it had original web series or had exclusive projects that were only available on the website. If it focused on underrepresented languages, amateur filmmakers or long-form, serialized content that had mass appeal to a local audience then having something exclusive to the website would be a great way to build up fans to that content. The production costs would have to be low, i.e. short season, very tight shooting schedule, producing for Indiwebseries creators etc.

And exclusives don’t have to be perpetual. You can have windows, geos, first runs – so many innovative ways to create exclusives. It will be interesting to see how they create buzz around new content launches, because at the end of the day, good marketing noise around a hidden gem is what makes it a hit! I really hope they create a cool ecosystem for non-mainstream content to be showcased.

I would also take desi. net seriously as a potential home for original content if I were on the creative side pitching a show. They seem like the kind of platform that would value niche voices such as regional dialects, experimental formats and culturally specific comedy which global platforms tend to lump together and water down for a wider audience. Hindi speaking platforms are desperate for identity and therefore would likely greenlight edgier pilots that would get rejected by bigger streamers.

Exclusivity means a lot to creators and studios alike. For a project to truly thrive, it typically needs an exclusive deal, more creative control and more aggressive marketing support. With desi. net, I would want to know how they treat creators. Would a director retain festival rights? Would they permit short runs in theater? From my seat originals are the clearest way for a platform to differentiate themselves. Original web series would focus on local language stories and genres that many global companies can’t or won’t touch. A good mix of gritty crime stories (think ‘Sacred Games’), intimate family dramas (think ‘Made in Heaven’), and even snappy entertaining stories with a regional twist would do well. desi. net would be able to control release dates, merchandising and more to milk the most out of the series and lock in high retention with their subscribers. It’s a no-brainer really.

On the business front, this would all hinge off a couple of factors: budget, good partnerships with creator(s) who have an audience, and smart exclusivity deals. I think if desi. net were to invest in a few of the high quality pilots that are out there, and launch them with corresponding social media marketing (perhaps even tie in with festival screenings?), they would see a spike in retention as the title is exclusive to the service for a certain window of time. There is chatter in certain creator circles about possibly launching short-form stories. Not a full-on series just yet, but possibly commissioning short stories or side comics to add to existing titles on the platform as exclusives for subscribers. This would add a ton of value for subscribers without the cost of animation. If they find that they’re doing well with these sorts of stories then maybe they can scale up. It seems like the most natural first step for them. They could even hold contests for user-submitted stories to foster community and possibly find a new hit. That would be pretty cool.

I just want good stories. I don’t care who makes them or where they host them. If Desi can make a good story that I haven’t read elsewhere, I will support them. If not, then I won’t. That’s all there is to it for me. The rest is all just speculation on business models and trends in the market. That’s all interesting but in the end, it’s all just noise. All that really matters is the final product that I read on my screen. Is it compelling? Does it make me feel something? Does it have a next chapter that I want to read? That’s all that matters to me. The rest is all just background noise.

If they’re smart they’ll go with an audio drama. Its production costs less than a typical animated TV series and with good voice acting and sound design, it can be highly immersive. This could be their first foray into production and I really hope that someone at Desi is considering an exclusive audio series for their site. They already have a written and visual dimension on the site, so an audio dimension could be added to give their fans another way to experience the web novel that they already publish on the site. It has a lower barrier to entry than than typical TV series, a quicker production time and could be used as a ‘proof of concept’ for other bigger productions.
