It refuses to die, unlike my social life." Humor lightens the tension and makes moms more likely to accept the surface story. Those lines respect the parent’s instincts while keeping specifics safely vague. Or the emergency fallback: "If I don’t pick up in an hour, text me once and then don’t worry — I’ll call you back." Those give moms agency and reduce panic, which is honestly the emotional currency most protagonists are trying to buy. My favorite cinematic examples marry practical cover stories with intimacy — a protagonist texting, "Just with friends, heading home soon," while later slipping a little note into Mom’s pocket explaining everything when it’s safe. It all comes down to tone: reassure, pivot, or set boundaries depending on what the scene demands.
