Mostly it's a power fantasy, and I'm here for it. The appeal is simple: seeing your favorite characters interact. Goku meeting Superman, debating who's stronger over a huge meal. Vegeta trash-talking Iron Man's armor. The blending is just an excuse for that fun character salad.
Writers often use simple devices like dimensional rifts or the Hyperbolic Time Chamber malfunctioning. The logic is secondary. I skip the fics that spend 10k words explaining the multiverse theory and go straight to the ones where the action and dialogue crackle. If the characters feel right, I'll believe any universe blend, no matter how hand-wavy.

One thing I always come back to is how 'Dragon Ball' power scaling becomes the universal translator for crossovers. It's like this weird common language. You drop Goku into the 'One Piece' world, and suddenly we're debating if Luffy's Gear Five could withstand a Kamehameha. The fun isn't just in the fight outcomes, but in the cultural collision. How would Vegeta react to the ninja politics in 'Naruto'? He'd probably blow up the Hidden Leaf Village out of sheer annoyance at their secrecy.
Authors have to solve the ki versus chakra versus devil fruit problem, and the solutions can be surprisingly clever. Some fuse the energy systems, making ki control a advanced form of chakra manipulation. Others keep them separate, which leads to hilarious misunderstandings—like Goku trying to sense Reiatsu in 'Bleach' and getting utterly confused. The blending often highlights the core themes of the other series through a 'Dragon Ball' lens, asking what 'true strength' really means outside of just power levels.
My favorite kind are the ones that don't just transplant the characters, but merge the worlds. A story where Namekians are an ancient race in the 'Star Wars' galaxy, or where the Dragon Balls are a legend in 'The Legend of Zelda'. It makes the crossover feel earned, not just a random encounter.

Honestly, I think a lot of these crossovers are pretty lazy. It's just Goku showing up somewhere and fighting the local big bad. The real interesting blends are character-driven. Take someone like Future Trunks—his whole vibe is time travel and post-apocalyptic grit. Dropping him into the grim world of 'Attack on Titan' or 'Berserk'? That's where you get real drama. He's already seen his world destroyed; how would he interact with Eren Yeager's brutal philosophy? That potential for ideological clash is way more compelling than another vs. debate.
The best fics I've read use the crossover to explore a character's psychology in a new context. Piccolo mentoring a young hero from another universe, for instance, because he understands the weight of a destined legacy. Those stories blend the universes on a thematic level, not just a physical one. The worlds don't need to literally merge; the characters bring their own universe's rules and trauma with them, and that's the blend.

I've always been fascinated by the reverse crossovers, where characters from other series end in the Dragon World. Imagine a 'Harry Potter' wizard arriving there. Magic in DB is either wish-granting or demonic, so how would Hogwarts-style spellcraft even function? Would it be seen as a weak parlor trick, or a fascinatingly different application of energy? An author has to decide if ki neutralizes spells, or if they operate on parallel tracks.
This creates a unique narrative tension. A clever protagonist from a less overpowered series has to rely on wit and their unique skills, because they can't possibly win a beam struggle. I read one once where Sherlock Holmes was investigating a crime in West City, and the entire conflict was intellectual, trying to outthink a villain like Pilaf. The universes blended through genre—mystery meeting battle shonen. The DB universe's rule of 'strength solves everything' gets challenged by a character whose primary weapon is deduction. That contrast is where the real blending happens, in the clash of narrative conventions.

She had no idea how long she had been sleeping for but she woke up to the sound of someone sniffing. She was drowsy so she paid not much attention to it but then it continued, then she heard the voice again, “Lavender, you use lavender for your hair. How have I never sniffed your hair before?", the sniffing continued.
The sound reverberated through the caves, whilst she felt the vibrations on his chest where she lay, but she did not need that to know whose voice it belonged to. It was deep but not hoarse, somehow it was powerful and soothing at the same time, it was the voice of a god, one that had spoken to her all of these months, one she had replayed over again in her head till it was ingrained in her memory.
“Dragomir…”, she whispered in a teary voice, she proceeded to stand up but he held on to a part of her hair and was sniffing it.
When he noticed her staring at him, he stopped and stared back at her as if she had just caught him trying to steal from the cookie jar.
“Was that creepy?”, he asked.
Man dies. His last act in the previous life generates him an absurd amount of karma. He meets a god, and it reborns him in a crossworld of Larry Potter and DxD. He gets a gift, one that can only be fully explored with the knowledge that he learned in his previous profession in the previous world. The keeping of knowledge is also a gift. And with that, his karma is spent.
Thrown in the world with a 'good luck' and a slap in the back, he fights to survive until the start of canons.
The time until that, 1000 years.
Yeah… Now read about some of his adventures in this crossed over world, beginning already in HP canon.
English is not my main language, so you will find some strange stuff, like the mix of North American and the Queen’s English.
Disclaimer: All characters that you recognize from the franchise of Larry Potter and DxD are propriety of its respective creators and I only wish that they were mine. But they are not. I only own the MC, the OCs, and the ideas that generated the non canon plot.
Leaving your world and coming to another all seems wrong and right.
