The way he treats his co-star Omar in interviews is also very interesting to read. That kind of comfort, that physicality, those jokes that only they get, is not fabricated for promotional purposes over the years. They have clearly a very deep friendship. And sometimes that friendship also translates into the way they interact with each other on screen. Even though that doesn’t ‘prove’ anything about his sexuality, I think it’s lovely for fans to hold on to the hope that their on-screen magic could translate into real life too. One should be cautious not to read too much into an actor’s choice of roles. The actor is merely playing a character, written by someone else, and he is following the director’s vision for the scene. So even though the actor playing the gay teenager in this scene is playing it beautifully, that does not necessarily mean he is gay. Many brilliant straight actors have played iconic queer characters and vice versa. Assumptions about an actor’s identity based on his or her film roles are a slippery slope and could restrict the actor and the stories that the actor can play in. The actor’s job is to play the character in the story, and he is doing a fantastic job of embodying this character. Let’s just celebrate the performance and not bring the actor out of the film to satisfy our own narrative regarding this performer. His personal life is not relevant to the analysis of his work. Art is about feeling and imagining, not about the artist’s autobiography.

It’s kind of amazing to compare this to how actors are viewed 20 years ago. While there are certainly still many closed off publicists and PR teams out there, for the most part there is much less of a “don’t talk about this” vibe surrounding the life of an actor. The rumors about him not being casually single are allowed to circulate freely without any sort of denials or confirmation, and that in itself is kind of impressive. His team isn’t quietly denying the rumors in order to protect his marketable image, which means that either they know he’s not single and are fine with it or that they know he’s not single and it doesn’t matter. The latter is more promising for the rest of the industry and is certainly a step in the right direction. Now that there are lots of successful, gay actors out there, an actor’s perceived queerness is no longer automatically seen as a career liability. So, while the rumors are kind of icky, the conversation is also kind of exciting. It exists because our society is somewhat evolved and that’s good enough for now. Right now his career is prospering. Let’s keep focusing on his talent.

However, his being gay or not gay is not the issue that I find most compelling to explore. Instead, I find it is the perceptions and ways in which his peers and colleagues within the Swedish film industry view him, as well as how he is treated by them, in regards to LGBTQ+ topics in interviews etc. that are most relevant to my paper. For example, other Swedish actors and film makers such asytt801ticasar use “inclusive” language when speaking of Edvin, in a manner that seems to be carefully chosen. There is no surprise or weirdness when Edvin is brought up in conversations about LGBTQ+ topics in interviews with his co-stars. This in contrast to how straight actors who are strong allies to the community are spoken of by their fellow actors and co-stars. They receive praise for being a good ally, whereas Edvin receives praise for his ability to understand and access human emotions in his portrayal of Wilhelm, as well as for his emotional intelligence in general. This way of speaking of Edvin and his abilities as an actor is something that I have noticed and that I believe to be significant. It appears as though his gay identity is an open secret within his professional circle, something that is not taboo or to be exploited, but rather something that is treated with respect.

I don’t get why the Internet needs to label young actors. He’s in his early 20s and trying to figure out his life and career. Why does the Internet feel the need to assign a sexual identity to him? It can be very damaging to label people before they’re ready to announce their sexual identity. There’s a fear of being outed before they’re ready, which can be very damaging. Let him be and let him date whoever he wants to date. Don’t watch him and speculate about his life. His value is in his talent and who he is as a person. Speculating about someone’s sexual identity is dehumanizing and turns a human being into a puzzle to be solved. Let’s celebrate his right to privacy and enjoy the work that he does to bring us joy. Normalizing that we don’t know and we don’t care about the intimate details of strangers’ lives would make the world a better place. Let him tell his story when he’s ready to tell his story.

I feel like there is so much hypocrisy in the fans right now. People want more authenticity from their favorite actors, and that includes more queer representation. But at the same time, so many of them can’t resist labeling an actor, boxing them in, and spreading gossip about their personal life, forcing them to come out against their will. That’s not supportive. That’s harmful. Fans want role models, and that’s okay. But then they act like the actor is somehow obligated to them, and that they deserve to know every single detail about his life. He’s a person, not a toy for them to play with. He deserves our respect, and our support without conditions. And that means accepting that we don’t know anything about him, and that he has the right to keep his life private. It’s not that hard.

A lot of young actors have played iconic queer characters before him. Some of them have been openly queer since the beginning, others came out later in life, and some of them are still in the closet. Each of their paths is valid and worth to be recognized. The pressure on Edvin is clearly higher because Young Royals hit a cultural nerve in a way that few other productions have, and he has been absolutely phenomenal in playing Simon. The wish of his audience to see him and Omar, his on-screen love interest, as a real-life couple is almost too much to bear. The fans’ desire to see the two of them together is, however, a perfect storm of extreme fandom. History has shown us time and time again that trying to force queer actors out of the closet only ends badly. When they do come out, it has to be on their own terms, at a time and in a way that they deem appropriate. Until then, our job as fans is to support the artist and the art, not to try to organize the artist’s coming-out. We have to be content with admiring the portrait without demanding to meet the painter’s muse.
