It fleshes out the world in a way a two-hour film can't. I've read crossovers where the Madrigals interact with other magical families, or AUs where the gifts are curses. Those stories make you reconsider the original's premise. What if Pepa's mood literally caused a drought? The fanfiction possibilities force a closer look at the characters' baseline motivations and relationships, expanding the story sideways and backwards.

I really loved how the fanfics picked up on the cracks the movie left showing. The film had to keep things moving, but some characters felt like sketches. Julieta healing more than just physical wounds, Bruno's years alone in the walls—there's so much texture to fill. A lot of stories explore that, and it changes how you see the official scenes. Like, I read one about Bruno scribbling telenovela scripts on the wall plaster to stay sane, and now I can't watch his little 'rat telenovelas' without getting a lump in my throat.
It's not all deep drama, either. The Antonio-focused stuff is adorable, showing his first days talking to animals and the pressure of being the 'new gift.' Dolores gets a ton of exploration about what it's like to hear everything, all the time, which the movie only hints at with her knowing about Mirabel and Bruno. Fanfiction turns those hints into full, messy lives.

Honestly, some of it feels like overexplaining. The movie's magic is in its economy—you get a sense of these people from a song and a few scenes. Spending 10k words on Camilo's shapeshifting insecurities can flatten a character who's meant to be a fun, chaotic side note. Not every question needs an answer.
That said, the Isabela redemption arc gets a lot of play, and some writers nail the shift from 'perfect' to powerful. Seeing her explore plant abilities beyond pretty flowers, maybe ones that are venomous or useful for construction, adds a layer the movie's musical number only starts. It's satisfying when a fic builds on the film's themes without just rehashing the plot.

A lot of my reading list these days is 'react' fics. I'm not usually a big AU person; I prefer canon-based stories, so watching the family actually see their own lives unfold on a screen feels like an extension of that. It forces them to confront things they've ignored. I've seen a few where the focus is solely on Mirabel's POV during 'What Else Can I Do?' and it's just so vindicating for her. It's not about the movie's plot being rehashed, it's about the emotional fallout. The writers use the movie scenes as a catalyst for the real hurt and conversations that were skipped over.
I also think the Bruno-focused ones are the most poignant. The idea of him having to sit through the 'We Don't Talk About Bruno' sequence, watching his family sing those awful things while he's right there? That's pure, potent angst fuel. The best ones I've read don't let anyone off the hook easily. Julieta has to see her daughter cracking under pressure, Pepa has to confront how her anxiety affected her kids, and Abuela... well, watching her own memories from an outside perspective is brutal. It's less about the watching and more about the silent, horrible realization that follows.
Honestly, the pickings feel kind of slim if you're only looking for fics directly about watching the movie. That's a pretty specific AU frame. I've stumbled on a few 'characters watch the movie' fics on Archive of Our Own—you can try the 'Alternate Universe - Watching the Show' or 'Reaction' tags. It's a niche trope that's bigger in some fandoms than others. For 'Encanto', the magic is usually in the family dynamics after the fact, so most writers dive into fix-its or exploring the generational trauma, not meta-viewing parties.
Your best shot is combing through AO3 with those tags and sorting by kudos or comments. Sometimes they're tucked into larger series. I remember one where the grandkids make Abuela watch a documentary about family pressure, which had a similar vibe. Don't sleep on fanfiction.net either; the search is worse, but older tropey fics sometimes hide there. Tumblr can have snippets or prompts, but full stories are rare.
I was actually thinking about this last week. Sure, the movie sets up obvious dynamics—Mirabel and Camilo’s chaotic-cousin energy, Isabela’s perfection with Luisa’s strength—but it’s the background moments that spark ideas for me. There's a single frame in 'We Don't Talk About Bruno' where Dolores covers her ears while Camilo shapeshifts wildly right next to her. That tiny interaction made me wonder about a sensory-overload bond, a ship built on one creating noise and the other desperately trying to find quiet within it. It’s not about romance per se, but exploring how their gifts would force understanding.
Most fics I see jump straight to the Isabela/Mirabel reconciliation arc, which is valid, but the movie’s magic system is the real ship generator. Think about it: a story where Bruno’s visions accidentally show him snippets of a future pairing he never considered, and his quiet horror/amusement drives him to meddle. Or Julieta’s healing food being the only thing that soothes Pepa’s weather headaches, leading to a tender, domestic sisterly ship that the film only hints at. The inspiration isn’t always in the main plot; it’s in the consequences of the magic.
Frankly, the family tree itself is a sandbox. What about a second-generation ship, like the child of Dolores and Mariano with the child of Camilo? The possibilities get weird fast, and that’s where the fun is.
I’ve always been drawn to how 'Encanto' fanfiction dives into Bruno and Mirabel’s relationship, often using their shared outsider status as a starting point. Writers love to explore the parallels between them—Bruno, the misunderstood prophet, and Mirabel, the overlooked Madrigal. Many fics focus on their emotional connection through late-night conversations in the walls or shared moments of vulnerability. Some stories have Bruno helping Mirabel unlock her own hidden gifts, symbolizing their mutual healing. Others show them teaming up to mend the family’s fractured dynamics, with Bruno’s wisdom guiding Mirabel’s determination. These fics often highlight their bond as a catalyst for the family’s reconciliation, emphasizing how their unique perspectives help the Madrigals embrace imperfections and rebuild trust.
