From an emotional investment angle, reading a long series in order is like growing up with a friend. You witness every victory, every failure, every heartbreak. When a character makes a tough choice in book seven, you understand the weight of it because you lived through books one through six with them. That depth of connection is something you can't get by sampling. It's a commitment, but for the right series, it transforms the reading from simple entertainment into a meaningful personal history.

My two cents: ignore prequels written later. Authors sometimes write a prequel novel years into a series. Read it in publication order, not timeline order. The prequel often assumes you already know the characters and contains dramatic irony or references that only work if you've read the later-set books first. It's a supplement for established fans, not a starting point. Always default to the order in which the stories were told to the world.

Anyone else get decision paralysis when starting a long series? I stare at the list, read ten different 'best order' posts, and then just re-watch a comfort show instead. The commitment feels huge.

Okay, here’s a hot take: sometimes the first book in a series isn't the strongest, and insisting on chronological order might cause someone to give up on a fantastic series prematurely. For instance, Robert Galbraith's Cormoran Strike books. The first one, 'The Cuckoo's Calling', is good, but the series really hits its stride in later entries with more complex plots and deeper character work. If someone struggles with the pacing of the first book, I'd almost recommend skipping ahead to a later, more gripping one to get hooked, then circling back. Purists will hate this, but keeping a reader engaged is more important than strict order.

I'm a mood reader. Some days I want a locked-room mystery, others a globetrotting chase. If a series has variety, I'll pick the book that matches my mood, order be damned. Life's too short for rigid rules when it comes to fun. If I love the author's writing, I'll eventually read them all anyway, and the timeline will sort itself out in my head. Chaos can be a perfectly valid reading order.

The Broken Billionaire Series comes in lists of gorgeous stories that dive into the craziest of emotions and heartfelt messages that will make sure to fully entertain you in the best way possible. Do take note that my first language is not English so I apologize for any grammar or spelling mishap. I will deal with that soon but please, enjoy your day and I hope you will have a great time reading:)
For a pure, plot-twisty series that builds on itself, you can't go wrong with Karin Slaughter's Grant County and Will Trent books. They're set in the same universe, and while you could read the Will Trent books alone, the emotional impact is a hundred times greater if you've followed the characters from Grant County. There's a recommended hybrid order online that interweaves them for maximum payoff. The Kindle store has them all, but you'll need a guide.
I'd steer you toward the 'Department Q' series by Jussi Adler-Olsen for Nordic noir, but for an Indian setting, try the Vish Puri series by Tarquin Hall. It's not a thriller in the high-stakes, global conspiracy sense—it's more of a delightful detective series set in Delhi with a brilliant, mustachioed private investigator.
The first book is 'The Case of the Missing Servant'. The order matters less for pure plot continuity, but reading them in publication order lets you see the characters develop. The charm is in the vivid depiction of modern India and Puri's hilarious, food-loving personality.
Why limit to English? If you can read translations, the Tamil thriller scene is explosive. Authors like Sujatha and Rajesh Kumar have series that are cultural phenomena. The 'Kottai Vendra' series by Rajesh Kumar, for example, is a political crime saga where order is paramount—the story spans decades of a fictional city's history. Translations might be harder to find, but hunting them down is worth it for a completely different narrative flavor. The chronological sweep in these series is often grander, tracing the evolution of a place alongside the crimes.
For a pure, unadulterated adrenaline pipeline, it's hard to beat Lee Child's Jack Reacher. Strict publication order, starting with 'Killing Floor'. The beauty is you could jump around—most are standalone—but reading in order lets you see Reacher age, subtly change, and witness Child refining his iconic, sparse style. The early books have a raw, brutal efficiency that some of the later ones smoothed out. You appreciate the formula more when you see it being built from the ground up, book by book.
